FCC looses the battle against Comcast
by Zuzana Zelenakova
Comcast is the largest cable operator and home internet service provider in the United States. Founded back in 1963, it has faced a lot of controversy since then. Most recently, it is waging fight with Federal Communications Commission (FCC) concerning so called network neutrality. In 2007, the Associated Press reported that the company "actively interferes with attempts by some of its high-speed Internet subscribers to share files online, a move that runs counter to the tradition of treating all types of Net traffic equally." In 2008, FCC announced its intentions to investigate the matter as complaints were piling about Comcast meddling with the Internet traffic as the su! bscribers try to share files online. Tuesday, the decision came from a federal appeals court in Washington that the FCC does not have the authority to stop the Comcast controversial policy of interfering with its customers´ file sharing. This particular case led to numerous petitions, whose aim has been to prohibit Internet providers in general from blocking the online content as they like. A lot of attention is paid to the issue of Internet neutrality, particularly in the US, as it puts large Internet providers such as Comcast, Verizon, AT&T against applications and content providers like Goggle or Skype that are dependent on the fluent net traffic to deliver their products to consumers. "This is not about government regulation of the Internet," said FCC chairman Julius Genachowski back in September 2009, when the commission introduced new rules for Internet providers. "It's about fair rules of the road for companies that control access to the Internet." And what is t! he Comcast official reaction to these accusations? According t! o the co mpany´s spokeswoman Sena Fitzmaurice Comcast is satisfied with the court´s decision, she also denied the claims that Comcast blocked file sharing. However, she admitted that it has been “delayed” in some cases of overload.
