Watch out what you tweet, U.S Congress is archiving
by Zivka Deleva
Someone would say foolish, other non necessary and surprising, but the Library of U.S Congress brought a decision to create some new history. Maybe today you laugh about the possibility for your grand-grand children to be able to read what you have written to your lovers, friends using the micro-blogging service Twitter. So, it doesn’t matter if you are not a respected politician or some celebrity, if you have said something originally, you might enter the big archive of Twitter messages. Google is ready to provide that search possibility or you. It is still unclear how the selection is going to be done, because in the four years while Twitter exists, every day, thr! ough this communication service, are sent around 55 million messages up to 140 characters. All public tweets are going to be cataloged from a team in the Library of the Congress, and the first publication is expected in august. According to Library of Congress’s blogger Matt Raymond, this might turn to a very important archive. He says that Twitter has an immense impact on culture and history. “I’m no Ph.D. but it boggles my mind to think what we might be able to learn about ourselves and the world around us from this wealth of data. And I’m certain we’ll learn things that none of us now can even possibly conceive.” Everyone would ask himself what is the justification of this kind of project. As Dylan Casey, Google’s product manager for real-time search, states, “tweets and other short-form updates create a history of commentary that can provide valuable insights into what’s happened and how people have reacted”.! The Library of Congress is formed 210-years ago and it repres! ents a c aretaker of knowledge and cultural history. Now it is trying to follow the time and innovations and enter deeper into the digital world. The Twitter archive will enter bigger project named “Web capture” in which there were clippings about important national topics, like web pages, online news articles, concerning events like presidential elections and especially the 9/11.
