SigEx Telecom : Google Earth eyes partnership with B.C. governments by Delia Cruceru
Friday, Google announced that they and the government of British Columbia have been in talks. The government will supply update information about the province to Google Earth and Google Maps. Itâs the first Canadian province that supplies this kind of information to the mapping service. Michael Jones, chief technology officer at Google Earth said about the governmentâs initiative: "The provincial government has been talking with us about providing data so that all citizens in the province who use our service will have the best possible data,â Pat Bell, Agriculture and Lands Minister, said that Google might have access to data and images banked in the Integrated Land and Resource Registry, giving detailed information about all the areas from the province. "We've been working very closely with Google and Google Earth in establishing a link into our database system, which will provide much higher-quality video image. Our database is far more current and of higher quality than the existing database that Google Earth uses. We are very close to concluding a deal with Google Earth." said Bell in a phone interview. This agreement will boost up the tourism industry in the area, providing to visitors information about the area and places to visit, shops, hotels.

Probably I don't say this too often, but I love Intel. It is not only one of the best brands, but it has earned numerous times the flattery of being called number one. Although they are very reserved towards their private commercial offerings, they broke the patterns and launched the biggest open-source project they had until now. They also collaborated with Linux in contributing code to its kernel and developed some open-source drivers. The TBB (Threading Building Blocks) is a software C++ template library that helps programmers to build applications running in parallel which means it uses multi-core processors and is both an open-source and a commercial offering. Some of the TBB's advantages are: it detects the number of cores on the hardware making the necessary adjustments in order for the software to adapt and this way using multi-core to its fully potential; it is easier to use and more efficiently and has programmers express tasks instead of threads, etc. The company has kept its pragmatic side and it is still supporting the commercial version of Intel Threading Building Blocks 2.0 at a price of $299. The commercial version includes support from Intel and I guess that is the reason why you pay instead of simply acquiring from someone else. The TBB will be offered under the GPL v2. So, the world leader in silicon innovation, develops technologies, products and initiatives to improve the way people work and live. I like this brand because it always bring something new, breaking the patterns and taking you by surprise. Don't waste your time anymore, see how you can put your hands on a TBB processors, because it's a great thing. Not only for those that needed for their employer, but also for the usual user, that won't feel right from the beginning the benefits of this product. Surf on and enjoy!

Countries all over the world have as strategy the innovation in order to create hotspots locations. Most of them are willing to share their new technology to the others and of course there are still some that would rather keep it personal. Hungary, Poland and Roumania are three of the countries that want to export their innovations and my country's name being there doesn't surprise my at all. Roumania is a small country, but with loads of opportunities and great talents that are for sale, because of the wage problem. So like the other two, it tries to create a value-added products and then sell them abroad at a higher price that they would be forced to do in their country. This is the model adopted from U.S. and most of the Eastern countries had adopted it too. According to Mark Minevich, CEO of Going Global Ventures Inc, Russia and the Ukraine are trying to copy the Singapore's model, that is to offer tax deduction and benefits to manufacturing companies (Pioneer Incentive, Investment Allowance are only some of the incentives of Singapore). The first two countries mentioned in the beginning would bring experts from U.S, UK, China and India only to to assist in their research and development efforts, the government having less involvement than in Russia or Ukraine. In my opinion Roumania has no need of foreign help, it has enough skilled workers and the educational level is very high here, despite the statistics. The prove is in the great number of Romanian workers all over the world. There are six Romanians working at NASA as tech engineers and examples like this are too many too put it down in writing. The Romanian students that leave with a scholarship abroad are retained there to work, because they prove themselves hardworking and highly prepared. So it's essential not to trust only statistics and try to find out the truth behind them. I am subjective indeed, but I might just know more then someone who has never put a foot in the country discussed. Surf on and discover the truth on your own. Rather surprising news hit the open-source world last week, as PHP 4 will be no longer supported. With PHP 6 due to come next year and PHP 5 already adopted by major users like Yahoo and Facebook, the developers have decided to end the support for PHP 4 on December 31st 2007. They announced also on July 13 that they will only provide security fixes on a case-by-case basis until August 8th 2008 for this 2000-released software. PHP is used to create more complex web pages such as catalogs and is an open-source creation; therefore developers donât have the means necessary to support three versions of the program, including next yearâs release. Nevertheless, they will help website administrators make the transition by providing a Migration guide for PHP 5 and two more guides, PHP 5.0 to PHP 5.1 and PHP 5.1 to PHP 5.2. Though some donât think this was a necessary measure, because the next version hasnât quite caught on as expected; Andi Gutmans from Zend, a start-up company that distributes PHP, claims that 80% of Zend clients have passed to version 5 but that there are still lots of useful sites using PHP 4, which lead to smaller statistics for version 5. Developers advise users to take the remaining time to upgrade to the next version of PHP. PHP 5 has already been on the market for three years so everyone is familiar with it, and now itâs just a matter of time before they will finally start to make good use of it.

SigEx Telecom : HP, MIT bolster DSpace open-source archives by Delia Cruceru
Hewlett Packard and Massachusetts Institute of Technology Libraries announced Wednesday the launch of the non-profit DSpace foundation, an open source system for digital archives, to support more than 200 institutions around the world for managing preserving, and share their documents, collections and research data. They also declared that the new director of DSpace Foundation is Michelle Kimpton, formerly of Internet Archive. "The creation of the DSpace Foundation and Michele Kimpton's appointment are important steps in the evolution of DSpace," said Ann Wolpert, MIT's director of libraries. "Together, these actions signal that both the platform and the community have successfully reached the point where an independent organization is needed to direct the project." DSpace was created in 2002, by the alliance of HP and MIT, and itâs an archive Internet based, so it can be accessed from anywhere in the world by anyone. Microsoft released an archive in Open XML format, but open source advocates say that Microsoftâs format itâs not that open and it canât be compared with rival formats. Pamela Jones, an open-source expert and editor of the Groklaw blog, wrote: âIf it were, Microsoft wouldn't need to make Novell and Xandros and Linspire sign NDAs (nondisclosure agreements) and then write translators for them,"

SigEx Telecom : Open-source group to meet BBC over iPlayer by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu
Concerns about a cross-platform version of the BBC's iPlayer are to be discussed in a meeting by the BBC Trust, the broadcaster's independent governing body and The Open Source Consortium.BBC's online on-demand television service, iPlayer, was launched last month and it will only be available for public download on 27 July only for Windows XP users. President of the Open Source Consortium, Mark Taylor, said that the open-source industry group wants to clarificate whether the BBC is committed to the iPlayer being cross platform and how it is going to be achieved.Taylor also said that:"We want to know actually is it going to be cross platform and, if so, how do they [the BBC] intend to do that if the technology is based on a single platform? It would not be significantly more difficult to produce a cross-platform iPlayer than to have one locked into a single technology stack. We don't want to be complaining about it. We think the BBC [is] terrific. We think the iPlayer is a great idea and we'd like to see it cross platform. A spokesman from BBC said that it has always been committed to the iPlayer being platform neutral and is "very keen that this happens as soon as possible".A condition of iPlayer approval is platform neutrality and the Trust is running six-month reviews on the project, "in order to ensure that we move towards platform neutrality as soon as possible".

SigEx Ventures : Ooma is ready to take VoIP to the next level by Corina Ciubotaru
Gone are the days when landline phone companies forced us to use their low-quality, high-cost services just so we could keep in touch with our friends. This is the age of Web 2.0, of personalized profiles and Internet TV. And of course, it is the age of Internet phone calls. The newest entry in this market is called Ooma and itâs kind of special. Itâs capable of combining a landline and VoIP calls without disruption and can even act as a second line for incoming calls. Ooma can switch between the two lines and solves the main VoIP concern: what to do if the Internet connection fails? An Ooma hub is the only thing you need, apart from a phone of course, to get your new telephone line up and running; the hub costs $400 and has a built-in answering machine. Calls over the Internet are free, but you will still need to keep the landline if you want to use it for, say, emergency numbers when the connection is down. The release of Ooma is scheduled for September 2007 but until then, producers will give 1500 units to selected clients, which will also get three free tokens for friends who want their own Ooma. The network is thought to grow fast but will have to work around peopleâs distrust in VoIP. Free phone calls would give the Internet another layer of user interactivity and would ultimately help it achieve the ultimate goal of connecting all the people in the world.
