Nokia is taking Apple head on
by Corina Ciubotaru

Guess who's trying to become a threat to Apple's domination of the music business? Well, believe it or not, it's Nokia. The Finnish company has announced the release of a new type of phone, called N81 last week and through its online service Ovi it will provide users with music, movies and other stuff they might be interested in. Nokia has already signed deals with the four big labels in the U.S. (Universal, Sony BMG, Warner Music and EMI) to distribute their music through the new service, and it is the only company other than Apple who has managed to do this. If this move is a success, Nokia is on its way to expanding its area of dominance, though Apple is hard to beat. iTunes is the biggest music selling site and iPod has dominated the MP3 players market ever since its release, not to mention the iPhone which was a hit also. Now, Nokia came up with a range of phones costing between $300 and $750, with 8 GB of memory and a sleek design. A song purchased from Ovi will cost one euro, whereas one on iTunes is 99 cents, or $1.29 without DRM. They're trying to beat Apple with their own weapons, as well as at their own game and they're basing their optimism on the fan base, because the Finnish company has sold over 100 million devices in the second quarter alone. It's gonna be fun to watch this battle of giants and in the competition, consumers will probably have the most to gain, as at least one of the companies will eventually start to offer various perks.

Teen trades hacked iPhone for new car
by Delia Cruceru

Buddies of George Hotz, the teen that hacked the iPhone, should take their words back. They didn't thought when they said that he lost his summer doing nothing that the curly haired teen would prove them that it wasn't all for nothing. Now he traded the unlocked iPhone for "a sweet Nissan 350Z and 3 8GB iPhones." Hotz reached a deal with CertiCell, a mobile-phone repair company based in Louisville, Ky., founded by Terry Daidone and offered him a consulting job too. He said he will be sending the three iPhones, "unlocked if they wish," to the online collaborators who helped him unlock the device. Hotz posted the news on his blog http://iphonejtag.blogspot.com, and wrote that Terry Daidone, the founder of CertiCell, a mobile phone repair company, contacted him and offered to make a trade for the modified iPhone. A spokesman for CertiCell, Jake Ducey confirmed the arrangement and said the company thought snapping up the piece of cellphone history would stir up publicity and business. "We've been pretty much blowing up ever since it happened," he said. Terry Daidone said in a statement on the company's website: "We are keenly interested in having Mr. Hotz assist our engineers in developing solutions to other software-related challenges, including software updating, reflashing and memory elimination of repaired and or refurbished cellular handsets."

Technology helps reinvent cell phone ads
by Delia Cruceru

In these days technology is everything. Having a computer, Internet connection and of course a mobile phone brings you the world. Advertisers thought that investing in ads for cell phones will be a gold mine. And indeed it is, as long as they keep spam off their ads, and instead bring to users important offers from retails shop or restaurants near them. Brands like Nokia Corp. and McDonald's Corp. knew how to read and render the trend of these mobile phone markets. The brands added interactive ads on cell phones, taking advantage of the device's ability to know where you are. Laura Marriott, executive director of the Denver-based industry trade group Mobile Marketing Association said that better handsets and faster networks mean "more brands utilizing mobile devices for more advanced marketing and advertising initiatives." The biggest market for cell-phone ads is Japan where 98 million people have mobile phones integrated with Internet capabilities. By 2011 revenues from advertising in this segment for Japan is expected to by $1 billion, last year they had $328 million that according to an April report Dentsu Communication Institute Inc. A spokeswoman from Southeast Asia's largest operator, SingTel, Tricia Lee said. "Our customers are fully aware that they will be receiving the ads, and from our initial findings, they aren't disturbed by them at all. We also found that a relatively large segment of customers are willing to try mobile advertising provided they receive something in return."

Many Skype users unable to make calls
by Delia Cruceru

Thursday, millions of users of the popular computer program were unable to log in. Users from Germany, Brazil, Vietnam and United States all faced problems and reported difficulties in logging on. The company declared: "Our engineering team has determined that it's a software issue. We expect this to be resolved within 12 to 24 hours." Rumours were saying that Skype was the victim of hacking or that the system crashed, but Skype denied those speculations reporting that the problem was "a deficiency in an algorithm within Skype networking software. This controls the interaction between the user's own Skype client and the rest of the Skype network." Today users from Europe, Asia or United Stated were able to log in to the free service and make long distance calls. Skype said that "even though it is too early to call out anything definite yet we are now seeing signs of improvement in our sign-on performance." With a total of 220 million of accounts and almost 5 or 6 millions of users connected to the service at the same time, Skype is a revolutionary computer program founded by Niklas Zennstrom and Janus Friis, which uses peer-to-peer technology to connect phone calls, instant messages and videos between its users. Skype can run on computers using Windows, Mac OS X, PocketPC orLinux.

WikiScanner, if you want to know who writes what you read
by Corina Ciubotaru

Ever wondered who writes Wikipedia articles? We can all edit them, but most of us don't bother to, so the job is left to a significant few. If you want to thank them, criticize or just find out their names, a guy called Virgil Griffith has the solution. It's called WikiScanner and it's got everyone's attention recently after it proved that some companies change the content of articles to suit their needs. It seems it's a fashion and they're all doing it, from The House of Representatives and The Senate to CIA to Diebold. The CIA is a bit more discreet than private companies, making minor adjustments in the most varied Wikipedia entries, while Diebold has erased parts of an article containing criticism in regard to their voting machines, and so has the Church of Scientology. The software compares the editor's IP address to a public list of companies that own certain IPs. We can't know for sure which employee is in charge with setting things straight in every firm, but it's a good way to end suspicions and have some evidence for future allegations. Wikipedia's founder Jimmy Wales is also a fan of the WikiScanner and he should be, because it's normal that people know who wrote the articles they take for granted. If anybody can edit a wiki, everyone should be able to get information in regard to the writer and decide if they are trustworthy. If it's meant to be transparent, it should be transparent all the way.

Social networking our lives
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

If you're a big fan of social networks you're going to love this new idea. Are you sick and tired of your MySpace friend calling your music stupid or telling you that you're to fat or to skinny? Do you like pets? Than this is the new thing for you! Dogster.com is an online community featuring pet photos posted by owners along with videos, dog diaries and travel stories. Are dogs to big, to smelly or simply not your thing? Don't worry there's always Catster.com. You can share pictures of your furry little friends and find persons that share the same passion as you do. I don't know what happened to going out in the park and meeting other people with dogs and cats. Fresh air and exercise plus real human friends to talk to about your pets are that bad? If you're a freaky car lover that spends his Sunday mornings washing and polishing it, Boompa.com is the place you've been waiting for. Let your ride shine on the Internet! You love your motorbike so much that cruising around with your friends isn't enough anymore? You have to let the world see your beautiful bike on sites like Velospace.org or Motortopia.com. I think you got the point! These Web sites represent our future. We're so afraid of people judging us in real life and now on MySpace, Hi5, and Facebook etc too. That's why we create online communities for everything we love, to avoid real contact... A little sad isn't it?

Shadow lamps to connect friends
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

The system called Teleshadow turns the image of one of your friends into shadow outlines, projected inside of a small decorative lamp, showing what your friends are up to at home. Creator Shunpei Yasuda aimes to create a real connection between live video and static images, and says he got the idea from actual Japanese history. The post-graduate student in Media Design at Keio University, says the paper walls that have been in japanese houses for ages preserve some privacy, while the shadows casted on paper by people movement act as a reminder of a person's presence. That's exactly what Teleshadow does : keeps some privacy, while permanently reinforcing this presence between rooms that might be cities away from each other. Mr. Yasuda exlains the traditional design of the lamp : "As this is a new media that fits our daily life, it was important to make it as a piece of furniture". The little invention is built out of a projector, set in the lamp's base, which receives input from the camera mounted in the friends house. After that, the software reduces image output to a point where the human body only appears to be a shadow. The number of friends a Teleshadow can support is four. Each of these four friends has a little card assigned. When one of the cards is inserted in the base of the lamp, it shows the friend corresponding to it. The Teleshadow, unlike live video streams sets an amount of privacy for the user by hiding some details, that a person would rather keep secret, according to Mr. Yasuda.

Green' tech shops have a way to go
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

Extremely air-conditioned data centers seems to require 40 or 50 times more power than a comparably sized office space. As enviromental issues become more and more the center of media's attention, companies have no other choice than to reduce this power consumption by "greening" the data centers that support Web pages, Internet traffic, etc. The process is easier said than done and even with improvements in new technologies that reduce power consumption, electricity usage is expected to double from 2006 to 2011 due to increasing demand. Why are data centers so hungry for power? That's easy. Only 30-40% of the energy is used on running the computers but in order for these to function properly and at optimum speeds, they need to be cooled, so the rest of the resources go to cooling and A/C systems. In this spirit, some of the biggest data centers can devour several megawatts of power, enough for a small city. A solution to power saving would be a spacing for the room, as to allow better circulation for air, while an even better solution is even using the outside temperature in different areas and times of year. Only problem is most of these mainframes are built too deep inside buildings to have a chance at fresh outside air. Not until recently have the industry's concerns about the issue crystallized. Chip manufacturers such as Intel Corp. and Advanced Micro Devices Inc. have ratcheted up the electrical efficiency of their microprocessors â€" a metric that no one cared about until the past few years. IBM and Hewlett-Packard Co. have invested in better ways to manage cooling systems. Another commonly talked about effort is virtualization, which means that one computer could handle functions for multiple machines at once. For example AISO, with it's solar powered system, mimics the function of 120 computers with the use of only four machines - clear save of energy. IBM also claims that it will save $250 million by taking 16,000 servers out and replacing them with only 30 big mainframe computers. Dave Douglas, vice president of Sun Microsystems Inc. stated : "We view green as a destination, in which case we focus on what we have left to do. When we look at that, we say, geez, we're not really green yet. We're greener â€" but we're not green",after managing to cut energy usage with a few percents last fiscal year.

A new scam
by Claudia Sonea

The Internet is a powerful tool; therefore it can be used by people eager to have an unfair gain. Computers are under the assault of "pump-and-dump" spam which makes bad guys rich. A leading IT security company claimed that global spam has increased 30 percent in the last 24 hours. "Pump-and-dump" process is based on a spam campaign promoting a company that has shares on the market and the owners wants share price to rise in order to sell and make profit. SophosLabs' experts discovered 500 million emails containing advice to invest in Prime Time Stores Inc. that shows how the technique works. Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Britain-based Sophos said it was the biggest spam campaign ever and was detected in Germany. The emails announce that shops of Prime Time Stores in Puerto Rico will be opened and advises everyone to buy shares. Prime Time Stores, which is the exclusive licensee for 7-Eleve, refused to make any comments, but the stock rose 2.35 percent at the beginning and 30 percent on Monday. According to Sophos stock campaigns account for about 25 percent of all spam nowadays and the perpetrators are difficult to catch by police or stock market regulators. Apparently this is the new way of making money and spam is likely to be used by international crime gangs. Levine, the author of the bestseller "Internet for Dummies", advises everyone to not trust this spasm emails, because since 1920s it is known that no one would give a stock tip for your own good. All in all, surf on and watch out for those PDF file encouraging you to buy shares of a company you never heard about.

More time spent on Web than newspapers
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

According to a study released on Tuesday, US consumers, this year, will spend more time on the internet than reading newspapers, going to see a movie or listening to recorded music. These results came from a study on how advertisers shift their attention and investments to areas that are becoming most interesting to consumers, like digital marketing. James Rutheford, managing director of VSS, firm that conducted the study, believes this to be a major finding and even finds it worrisome for the mass-media industry, whose ratings dropped slightly last year because of consumer shift from traditional sources of news and entertainment, to Internet and digital media. VSS estimates Internet advertising to become a $63 billion dollar industry by 2011, while last year the leading advertising mediums were newspapers, estimated at about $55.7 billion and broadcast television, at $48.7 billion. It is for the first time in a decade, that a study finds consumers to spend less time with media, in 2006, than the previous year. This year newspaper and recorded music will each drop to 4.9% of media audience while internet will grow to 5.1%. In 2006 Internet was last on media time with 5%, along with newspapers which hit 5% too, recorded music 5.3%, and Tv and radio summed nearly 70% of the time spent with media. This same study shows that more and more time is being spent on the Internet at the workplace, and that this phenomena is going to continue growing from 2007 to 2011.

New iMac on the market
by Claudia Sonea

Although the iPhone was not that successful as Apple had expected to be, the company still surprises with the newest models of iMac with 20-inch and 24-inch versions. It will revolutionize PC industry and will bring forward a slimmer design and faster chips. The price takes us by surprise too, 200 to 300 dollars cheaper than the oldest models. They are all-in-one desktop computers with aluminum casings and the last model of iMac was released in September 2006, therefore everyone expected to get something new on the market. Apple Chief Executive Steve Jobs presented the new product. Apple shipped a record 1.76 million Mac with earnings of 2.5 billion dollars. The company is still providing the 17-inch iMac model to schools, according to Apple's chief operating officer, Tim Cook. To compete better with the rival Microsoft Corp., it introduced iWork productivity software called Numbers that offers the same spreadsheet like Microsoft Excel. Despite all the trading and latest products, Apple's shares have fell 22 cents, but in extended trading have gained 69 cents. The company had the fastest grow in PC industry and is about to hit hard the market with the new iMac. Before we make any other forecast and be wrong like in the case of the iPhone, let's see how it will work and how will all turn out. Surf some more and find out what this product reserves you.

Better change your Medeco locks
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

A very interesting event took place in Las Vegas on Saturday; the best hackers gathered and demonstrated how easily they can crack electronic key-card systems and deadbolt locks used in places like the White House and the Pentagon. With a strip of metal and a thin screw driver, Marc Tobias of Security.org, demonstrated for AFP how Medeco deadbolt locks relied on worldwide at embassies, banks and other tempting targets for thieves, spies or terrorists can be opened in just a few seconds. Unfortunately the Medeco officials couldn't be reached for comment. Even stranger is that Marc Tobias has been contacting Medeco by e-mail in the past two months, explaining them how easy their deadbolt locks can be cracked and he remained with no answer. Understandably, Tobias refused to tell the world how he did it because this could cause very much trouble and asked AFP not to disclose how it is done. Tobias is trying to pull the alarm and advised anyone who uses this type of locks to start worrying. He also declared that there is no difference between breaking a lock and breaking in to a computer. So...start worrying and change your locks whether you live at the White House, in a huge mansion or in a small apartment.

Virtual Reality treatment to cure Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder
by Ioana Madalina Tantareanu

It`s not on a road in Iraq but inside a room at Madigan Army Medical Center, where psychologists plan to begin using virtual reality _ think immersive video games _ to treat post-traumatic stress disorder by recreating the conditions of war.Staff Sgt. Jeff Ebert's entire body flinches as a roadside bomb explodes near his vehicle. Smoke obscures his view. Gunfire rattles around him. That`s how doctors are provided by Virtual-reality therapy with a tool that uses visual, auditory and thermal cues to set the stage for treatment of veterans with the disorder. Post-traumatic stress disorder causes nightmares and flashbacks and it can also be very serious as some victims withdraw from society. Greg Reger, clinical psychologist at Madigan hopes to begin offering the treatment later this summer. He said that "Just about everybody is affected by their deployment experience. The vast majority come home and there's a natural recovery that occurs, but for the significant minority that does need additional help, we do see a number of those individuals here in the clinic." Reger is a former Army captain who recently came off active duty after spending a year in Iraq with the 62nd Medical Brigade. The Office of Naval Research, which in 2005 provided $4 million to several groups to examine how virtual reality can help treat PTSD founded the research. 15 percent to 30 percent of Iraq war veterans are affected by the disorder. Reger said that the Madigan program received a $200,000 grant for its work. During a demonstration at Madigan, Ebert appears visibly jolted when a concussion from a bomb rocks his mock Humvee as he drives it in a military convoy. Ebert, who doesn't suffer from PTSD, sits in a chair atop a low platform that rumbles and shakes to simulate the vehicle's motion where he wears a headset that displays the scene, apreciating the scene "very realistic."The 28-year-old behavioral health specialist from Toledo, Ohio, who returned from a yearlong tour in Iraq in November 2004, said "I had my fair share of convoys."

SigEx Telecom : Windows for Mac, only fby VMWare
by Corina Ciubotaru

Apple and Microsoft are the legends of the computer world. Along with them, their owners Steve Jobs and Bill Gates have also become, over time, two of the richest and most iconic figures of the IT world. It just wouldn't be the same without them. They have always been rivals and their products have never worked together; while Apple's Macintosh computer has become the number one choice when it comes to video editing, Microsoft has been dominating the PC universe ever since the release of the 3.1 version of Windows. But recently, Apple started to change things. They released computers based on Intel processors, after years of only working with IBM components, and now the news that they intend to release a VMWare program called Fusion that will allow Windows, Linux and Solaris applications to run at the same time on the Mac. No rebooting required and the virtual machine allows users to make restore points at any given time when the system is stable. VMWare Fusion can run 60 operating systems and allows the use of both 32-bit and 64-bit software. Since the release of the beta version in December 2006, hundreds of thousands of people have downloaded it and tested it against its rival, Desktop for Mac from Parallels. The judges are still deciding on this one. This innovative and long-awaited program is available for free download in the beta version; you can also pre-order it for $39.99 or buy it for the full price of $79.99 after its official release on August 6th.

Music, food for thought.
by Claudia Sonea

Silence please there is music playing. According to a study conducted by a team of researchers from Stanford University School of Medicine music stimulates the areas of the brain involved with paying attention, making predictions and updating the event in memory. The purpose of studying how the human brain sorts the events lead to another discovery, that 200 years ago music helps the brain to organize the incoming information. Bad news for me, I'll have to switch from P. Diddy to Mozart when I study for my finals. Furthermore, I will use mostly my right part of the brain and could sharpen its ability to anticipate events and sustain attention. So in the future music will be considered a medicine that will help you to memorize and be more attentive at classes and why not for children that are born with medical problems concerning the movements coordinates. I guess that will be a better way than the usual one. The future is bright, says an Orange ad, and we could put our hopes in it thanks to all the technologies. Instead of starting wars and conflicts, we should unite and make researches in finding cures for all the diseases that kill thousands of people every year. We could do so many things, because we are gifted with minds and the activities in which we train it should be to create a better world. Music is the food of love according to Shakespeare, but doctors say it is the food of thought, don't waste it on songs that are merely noises, try something new. I know it will be hard at the beginning saying bye-bye Diddy, but it worth. Enjoy your track.

Let's vote...!
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

It was about time someone casted doubt on the legitimacy of the electoral process, don't you think? Sure voices everywhere have stated opinions in this directions but some researchers from the University of California finally did something. They managed to hack their way into almost every California certified voting machine. Will you be amazed if I tell you they managed to bypass security in every machine they tested? I reckon not. The researchers were able to access the internal components of the machines by unscrewing some screws. They also were able to load a malicious firmware which they could have used to manipulate election results or to have access to the election management systems The last two presidential elections were dominated by many vote-counting failures. California developed these machines to "help" the voting system for the upcoming presidential primaries. As you can see the voting machines will be very helpful...the problem is for whom. It's so strange how the country which invented public relations and developed it to an actual art, the country which has the largest number of studies about communication and image and country branding doesn't worry about the fact that the world thinks the American people are stupid, based on the last two election results when in fact the USA has a problem with the voting system and not the voters...

Good and cheap
by Claudia Sonea

PC gamers all over the world hear my call. There are new products in town and we must have it. For any game player the fact that a good keyboard and a good mouse it is necessary in order to fully enjoy the game and handle it better is no secret anymore. Like always Logitech took care of the customers needs and it will soon release the improved keyboard and mouse products. G15 gaming keyboard will have display with native support on games for its LCD screen and six "on-the-fly" programmable macro keys with three modes for payers to access information faster and more efficiently, this way will be more compact in size, but with the same performance. The thing that I like the most is that I won't have to go under my desk turn the tower and find the USB port, because the G15 keyboard will have full-speed USB ports, both for the mouse and the headsets. Don't go away there is more delicious news to come. A keyboard is always accompanied by a mouse, G9 Laser Mouse that will allow us to make the necessary adjustments for the personal fit. You can either steer with their fingertips or you could use your palms to manipulate the action, thanks to an add-on Wide Load shell. Now it all comes down to the price, but nothing is too expensive for the pleasure of a unique game. It will all cost you 100 dollars. Although it might seem too much, I know it will worth. I want one and when it will be on the market in my country, I will use all my savings to purchase it. Good gigaspeed ahead with the latest technologies.

SigEx Telecom : Voting system in Florida will change by January
by Corina Ciubotaru

Democracy in America isn't quite in its finest time. Voting machines in Florida and California seem to have difficulty saying who won, and this is a good enough reason to have them replaced. So far, the system in use has been very high-tech: it used touch screens to cast votes, which were recorded onto a replaceable memory card. This card would be collected by specially designated people after the end of the voting day, and then the votes would be counted. The only trouble is these cards were so easily removed, that anyone could have switched a good one for a tampered one and mess up the results. So in the name of democracy, Florida has decided to replace voting machines in 15 counties with optical machines that scan the vote written on a paper ballot. This way, traces are left behind for a possible recount. Very democratic, isn't it? The news, however, sounds best for Diebold, the company producing the machines. They are the ones responsible for the dreaded touch screen systems and now several counties in Florida will be equipped with optical systems, also from this company based in Texas. The old voting method was in use for 6 years, but only in a few Florida counties such as Sarasota; the other 52 used optical validation. In other words, voters in this southern state will now return to their old ways and choose a candidate by marking and scanning. The new system is hoped to be applicable in all of Florida by January 29th, 2008.

SigEx Telecom : Windows Vista update patch
by Ana Maria Ciobanu

Hey you 60 million(supposed) Windows Vista users! Rumor has it there are some Vista patches in unofficial form running free on the Web. The update is supposed to help you with driver compatibility, increase file system performance and many others. I don't think it would be a smart move to install this Beta patch when v.1.0 of Windows is officially coming out next week. You just have to wait for automatic updates soon. Installing the Beta patch is kind of like children who are filling their machines with demo games. The update is called Vista Performance and Reliability Pack and is bound to solve some of the issues customers have been reporting. It will improve performance in resuming back to the desktop from the Photo and Windows Energy screensaver; it will resolve an issue where creating AVI files on Vista may get corrupted, it will improve the performance in calculating the ''estimated time remaining'' when copying/moving large files, it will improve the performance when copying or moving entire directories containing large amounts of data or files and many more that you'll probably see when you'll update your Vista. The main idea is that this update will improve Windows performance and this is a very good thing. I think I'll stick to my Windows XP though, for at least another year because I don't feel like changing my whole computer's hardware just to be able to install Vista. More RAM, a bigger hard drive, a faster processor...not yet. You Vista proud users out there should wait for the official update patch next week. Have fun with it!
