Cyber-crime is on the move
by Claudia Sonea

Technology keeps surprising us; the bad news is that despite it is mostly good there are some issues that require attention. One of them was revealed at the meeting between France and Russia. There are networks of ‘phising', a phenomenon of stilling people's personal details through spam emails supposedly from banks or other institutions. The victims are the French and the villains are the Russian. That is why French and Russian cyber-crime experts met and wanted to join forces to put an end to organized crime networks targeting the Internet or at least to reduce its activity. In Moscow police, investigators and business representatives among which the French Banking Federation it is also. Christian Aghroun, the head of the French delegation and chief of the Central Office Against Technology, Information and Communication Crime (OCLCTIC), stated for the AFP that the purpose of the four hour conference on Thursday was to tie more close the relations between the two countries, approaching issues like online fraud, children pornography, etc. There isn't anymore about students with a lot of free time on their hand and plans to release a virus in a building headquarters. It's a dangerous and massive crime network handling stuff like money laundering and distribution networks. The problem doesn't involve only these two countries, but it is worldwide spread. Therefore, be careful what email you are reading and never trust senders that you don't know. Surf on, internet lovers.

Chicago will be safer with new camera system
by Nina Gotzmannova

If you were worried about your safety and secretly willing the police to have their eyes everywhere, pack your things and move to Chicago. Not only you will live in a city with the most advanced video security network in whole United States, but maybe you will see the 2016 Olympics too. Chicago has thousand of cameras spread all over the city. In the near future the camera system will have several new features, which will make the monitoring of streets even more detailed and intelligent. The cameras in the city already know some smart things. Recently the system can recognize shooting, turn cameras to the source and call emergency. The new system would do more. It will recognize license plates, it will call emergency if a vehicle looked by police enters the city, it will call emergency even if a backpack will be left in a park for more than 30 seconds or if the same car will circle around Sears Tower for more than three times. It would simple monitor all suspicious activity in the city and call 911 in case of troubles. This all is done because people just don't pay enough attention about what's going on around them. They don't want to interrupt someone else's privacy and that leads to criminal activity, which is witnessed, but not reported. Chicago also wants to apply to International Olympic Committee as a potential organizer of 2016 Olympics. The new security system can be only a plus. But as expected, the voices of opponents raised shortly after announcing this news on Thursday. Activists for civil rights are afraid that this monitoring system will lead to a life carefully watched by Big Brother.

Invisible threat from hackers to United States
by Nina Gotzmannova

One picture is better than thousands words and a video is even better. Most possibly this are the thoughts of Homeland Security Department, which has presented a video about a hacker attack. It is full of smoke, danger and really graphic. HSD authorized Idaho National Laboratory to make these scenes. In the video is shown an industrial turbine spinning wildly out of control. Later it will almost broke, in the surrounding is lot of smoke and everything seems dangerous. Fortunately it is not a real video recording, only a simulation of a possible hacker attack. The intention was to gain attention to this not much known target of hackers' attacks. The computer systems are well secured and protected. It seems almost everyone know what a damage can a hacker make. But for this field, specialized electronics equipment which operates important power, water or chemical utilities, there is no such protection. This sensitive part of U. S. security is not monitored as computer networks are. In the video the HSD wanted to show the real impact of hacker at technology. It is believed hacker are just some geeks who try to smash and destroy computers only, letting the secure information spread all over the world. This video is different. Even the person who has never used a computer can see how big damage should a hacker or a group of hackers make. And the impact will be not only in cyberworld. This illegal act of smashing a system can influence lives of people or the environment. The Idaho National Laboratory described it as an ‘invisible threat'.

New Sidekicks on the way
by Nina Gotzmannova

In a fairy tale, sidekick is a person, who helps a partner in a superior position. The real-life Sancho Panzas and Doctor Watsons sell T-Mobile. Its Sidekick cell phones welcome two new siblings, Sidekick LX on 17 October and Sidekick Slide on 7 November. Both will contain several interesting upgrades. The first newcomer, Sidekick LX, is a luxurious object for demanding clients. For example the screen will have twice the resolution that of its forerunner Sidekick 3. It has also a slightly different look. Sidekick LX is slimmer and looks more elegant. This model is also the first Sidekick which allows to text messages with attached pictures. According to T-Mobile the Sidekick users are mostly young people who are texting often and the company wants to make them their favorite activity as pleasant as possible. But by adding new design they want also to gain attention of new customers. The name of the second cell phone is Sidekick Slide. The name was not chosen because it will have a slippery look, but because of its new technology. For the first time the cell phone won't be made by Sharp Corp., which produces other Sidekicks, but by Motorola Inc. Change of the company brought also a technology step forward. Slide is smaller and the screen won't swivel when revealing the keyboard. It will slide. It is also more concentrated on messaging. The first Sidekick was launched in 2002. It has grayscale screen. The second one, Sidekick 2, already had a color screen and two new buttons. The third edition of this cell phone is probably the most popular version. Sidekick 3 has a 1.3 megapixel camera, Bluetooth, EDGE network, a mini SD slot, a mini MP3 player and more. T-Mobile also announced a new BlackBerry able to make and receive calls not only via cellular network, but via WiFi too.

Nokia, Intel and Nokia Siemens Systems want to make WiMAX together
by Corina Ciubotaru

Nokia, Intel and Nokia Siemens Networks are coming together for the good of WiMAX. Since Nokia intends to add WiMAX compatibility to its N-series Internet tablets, they also decided to equip them with next-generation Intel chips. The WiMAX technology is similar to Wi-Fi but it allows users to be farther away from the hotspot, with speeds five times faster. The idea is to provide Internet access like mobile phone coverage, with the user passing from one hotspot to another without interrupting his connection. The three companies have started to test compatibility with components from other manufacturers for WiMAX networks to make sure they pass inspections from the WiMAX Forum quickly and the technology becomes widely popular in short time. And since both Intel and Nokia are suppliers for Sprint Nextel Inc, it was only natural the tests would be conducted in its laboratory in Herndon, Virginia. Nokia's future N800 model will benefit from Intel's new Baxter Peak silicon processor and also feature Bluetooth 2.0 and Wi-Fi connectivity. It will be able to connect to WiMAX under Sprint Nextel's network, scheduled to launch in 2008. Currently, Nokia devices use chips from companies such as Texas Instruments, Broadcom and Infineon; Intel has so far failed to enter the mobile phone chip processor market and sold its cellular chip division to Marvell. Other devices that will feature WiMAX connectivity through Baxter Peak processors include laptops from Asustek, Acer, Lenovo, Toshiba and Panasonic and rumors say the new chips will be very cheap and fast.

The OLPC's XO laptop is about to be released
by Corina Ciubotaru

Even though many said it will never work, the One Laptop Per Child program is now officially underway. Starting November 12, the laptops will be sold in pairs at $399, with one being taken home by the buyer and the other being sent to a child in a developing country, chosen by the company. Expectations of the laptops costing only $100 will be fulfilled only in a few years, after production prices will drop and if the program turns out to be a success. These computers aren't quite your regular laptops. They are shock-resistant and can withstand extreme temperatures, can be recharged through the most surprising means, including solar panels and hand cranks, while only needing about one-tenth of a regular laptop's energy. The XO, as its creators lovingly named it, has an open-source operating system designed by Red Hat and will feature UNICEF's learning software as well as a wireless Internet connection. It was designed to enhance the learning experience for children in developing countries, while also having a low cost, no polluting materials, and a lifespan of five years. It's a good idea that could work and could give rise to all sorts of new concepts that would improve design in future laptops, but still some consider that $400 is a bit too much for a needy student in the U.S. The first countries to benefit from the program are Cambodia, Haiti, Afghanistan and Rwanda; even though many meetings and handshakes with officials in China and India should have made them the first beneficiaries, the two countries haven't ordered any laptops.

Wi-Fi goes bye-bye
by Claudia Sonea

Like always officials are promising more than they can actually do. Doubtful from the beginning the plan of municipal Wi-Fi has now come to its peak and that means its end. Except Wireless Philadelphia who succeeded to cover 135 square kilometers, offering to 300 low-income residences laptops and Internet access for 10 dollars/ month and internet access in many parks for 20 dollars/ month, the rest of the cities were forced to give up because of economical issues. I know this is not new for anyone, but in deed San Francisco and Chicago halted plans and even Earthlink backed up. So both cities and companies are finding difficult from the economical point of view to use Wi-Fi technology for "digital inclusion" programs for low-income residents. Earthlink was offering a Wi-Fi program for San Francisco and had Google support. They offered a free access in exchange of viewing ads and pay for an add-free version. But they pulled back on the last minute and according to Rolla Huff, EarthLink president and chief executive, told a conference call with analysts the reason was the model it is not profitable. Daryl Schoolar, senior analyst at the research firm In-Stat confirms the fact that it is a very unstable market, while Jeff Kagan, an independent telecom industry analyst and Stan Schatt, analyst with ABI Research state that the true problem is to find a business model that works. Despite all this there are some new wireless technologies among which WIMAX has a longer range for each access point; Spint Nextel and Clearwire is about to release it in US and abroad. This might be the answer and how Kagan said they are only at the beginning with the Wi-Fi network, so it will take some time until they will get a model that works for both the cities and the companies, because in the end it is all reduced to one factor: profitability.

Silicon Valley done it again
by Claudia Sonea

The need of communicating has been bursting out since the cell phones were invented. Moreover, it's not about a need anymore, now the brand and the applications matters. When you buy a mobile phone you have to consider the camera, the infrared or Bluetooth, if it has MP 3 or MP 4, radio, etc. Of course another important accessory is the Bluetooth headsets, which have been a success story, although sometimes the small earpieces, that make people so funny because they talk into thin air when they actually talk to their mobiles, are extremely difficult to use. Why they are so hard to use? Well, the tiny buttons without any label that states to what purpose they serve might be one of the issues. So it's quite annoying to pair it or connect it because it communicates to the user with a single indicator light. Silicon Valley Company Sensory Inc. is very thoughtful and therefore we now have a smoother way to control the Bluetooth handset. For the first time an AP reporter revealed how we can pair a headset with the phone by pressing a button and giving a vocal command. It is obvious that the product was created by men; the pair confirmation is made with a friendly female voice. If you want to answer you could either say yes or no, depending on the person that is calling, if you want to talk or not with him/her. The product uses speech synthesis and recognition chips that are used in toys and other gadgets, but the difference is that nothing is introduced in the device. British company that is a leading supplier of designs for Bluetooth chips created an add-on blueprint for Bluetooth chips. Todd Mozer, Sensory's chief executive informs us that there are other options like speech recognition and it will not cost too much. Still you have to pay attention not to talk to radio or around someone else that uses a mobile phone. Could I afford such a device? Don't go away soon will follow the price such a wonder has.

New Web software
by Claudia Sonea

The long awaited product that SAP AG promised us has finally been launched. The new line of Web-delivered software is expected to change the company's business model and also to shake up the Internet software market. Business ByDesign is the name of the new software and it is mainly for mid-sized companies, created as a one-size-fits-all, subscription-based package. Sap's goal is to double their customers due to the new product, so until 2010 they should have around 100.000, because, according to Chief Executive Henning Kagermann, thanks top it a new era will begin for the company. SAP, the market leader in complex suites of software for large enterprises, has opened new roads by being the first major software maker to go on sale on the market for so-called software as a service delivered over the Internet. Rumor has it that the company invested around 400 million euros (279 million pounds) with the purpose of marketing and ramping up Business ByDesign by the end of next year. 12,300 developers are working on the project and that means like one fifth. The product includes some expensive features like integrating management of areas including financials, human resources, supply chain and customer relationship management will cost $149 per month per user and $54 per month per five users for a pared-down version. A more bold and expensive product than the one offered by Salesforce.com Inc that has 35.000 customers and a 60 dollar/ user price. Salesforce and privately held NetSuite are at this moment the best; they grow faster than their biggest adversaries Oracle Corp and Microsoft Corp and that it is why Salesforce's European president, Lindsey Armstrong, stated that there is no real threat. Also Dan Sholler, a software analyst with Gartner says he is quite skeptic regarding SAP's goals. Business ByDesign will first be distributed to selected customers in the United States and Germany, followed by Britain, France and China and according to Kagermann until late 2008 will continue to be distributed. Moreover, he says there will be no compromises, Business ByDesign being a completely different product belonging to a separately development branch. The only thing that we can do is wait and see what will happen next. Stay connected!

Intel to ship new chips in November
by Delia Cruceru

Intel unveiled Tuesday at the Intel Developer Forum the next cycle of microprocessors, code-named Penryn that will be sold for corporate server networks and high-end desktops beginning with Nov 12 and with the laptop version to be released in the first quarter of 2008. Penryn will be build with the 45 nanometer technology, one that is the most advanced in manufacturing process which improves performance and battery-life in computers. The chip will be 60% smaller than Intel's current microprocessor models, increasing performance by 20%, and be 100% lead-free. Chief Executive Paul Otellini said "Intel is cranking on all cylinders. We're pushing the technology as fast as we ever have as a company but on a broader front." He also revealed that Intel has in plans to have 15 new processors based on 45-nanometer technology by the end of the year, and another 20 in the first quarter of 2008. Otellini showed a test wafer, built on 32-nanometer technology containing 1.9 billion transistors, which features a type of memory known as static random access memory, or SRAM. Following the Penryn launch will be the Nehalem micro-architecture launch next year that will features eight cores with two threads each on a single die. Intel's Quickpath Interconnect will be used in Nehalem. They haven't revealed yet if the chip will contain a monolithic design, which is faster and offers better power efficiency, or bundle two quad-core processors on a single processor.

Ooma lets you make free phone calls
by Corina Ciubotaru

Ooma is the newest way to make free phone calls over the Internet. You've probably heard of free calls before and don't trust them very much because they're not that reliable, but ooma's creators say this little gadget is different. Although it makes calls through the Internet, it also uses a classic phone line and you can still own a subscription for when the Web connection is down and you need to make an urgent call to, say, the fire department. The person you want to talk to doesn't need to have an ooma, and all domestic calls are free, while international ones are very cheap. An ooma hub costs $399 and you can also connect a second line through a $45 ooma Scout; you don't pay any subscription. The whole system is based on getting data from your phone to another ooma close to the person you're calling, via the Internet, thereby reducing costs to the ones of local calls. It's pretty obvious now why the company needs to find as many users as it can in the shortest amount of time. All the users' free calls to friends without ooma are actually paid by the company and even if the idea in itself is very idealistic and convenient, the $27 million they have in venture capital will only last for so long. They have just begun selling the device, after giving it away on an invitation-only basis for a couple of months and have now reached 750 users. According to their estimates, they would need more than 50,000 of them across the U.S. to make the calls profitable.

New technology
by Claudia Sonea

Good news for the people that cannot hear; IBM created a system called SiSi that through an animated avatar can transform a speech into a text and then into gestures. Therefore the avatar can translate spoken words into sign language and replace the human interpreters for the deaf when they are unavailable or the conversation is too sensitive. The fantasy of attending a lecture while in the background is a digital character projected on a screen interpreting the speech in real time it finally became true. Still the IBM team and advocates for the deaf are cooling the euphoria by revealing that it is in trial and it works only with British Sign Language for now due to the fact that it was created in IBM research center in Hursley, England. The new technology is expected to become commercial and also to expand to other countries' sign languages. There is no ground unexplored by researchers and it's a good piece of news that instead of a new type of missile they created something useful for those that were less fortunate. With the new device communication should be easier and if all the institutions will acquire one, definitely the people with hearing disability will have a more comfortable life. Go IBM, go! Stay connected to see what price will have the new wonder.

Technology competition with new Ubuntu will be tougher
by Nina Gotzmannova

Canonical Ltd., a company most known for the promotion of free software, has another ace up its sleeve. Their product, Ubuntu software, is attacking its rivals in a technology fight. The toughest war will be probably with Oracle, one of the major software companies. Oracle has developed Oracle Enterprise Linux, an operating system designed to compete with Red Hat, another primary software company. But Ubuntu from Canonical seems to be too big bite for both Red Hat and Oracle. Since Canonical supports the free software distribution, Ubuntu is able to operate and work with various types of different software products. For the developing market of free software is this attribute a key factor. But for the hardware vendors it may be a problem. It's not easy to certify and trust something that can be rebuilt, refill or renew with completely new software. The "versions" of the final program might be uncountable. However, the support from these dealers is the only thing Ubuntu is missing on its final winning way and the only one supporting major system builder is Sun Microsystems. On the other hand rivals of Ubuntu said they provide only one version of the software. Canonical supports Ubuntu with lots of its commercial products to make it more attractive to the general public. They also try to convert mistakes of their competitors into Ubuntu pros. Red Hat, for example, offers a fixed applications suitable mostly for desktop users. Ubuntu allows the users to choose what they need and leave out the rest, but in case of need they can download it again. The new version of Ubuntu named Gutsy Gibbon will also include a special anti-hacker technology called App Armor. The release date is 18 October 2007.

BlackBerry users had some trouble with their e-mails this weekend
by Corina Ciubotaru

Several BlackBerry users had problems using their e-mail service Friday due to a software error, but the problem was fixed in about six hours. No detailed reasons were given for the server's failure even though it did take the service a very long time to become fully operational again. This is what seems to bother BlackBerry users the most: the company that produces the popular smartphone, Research in Motion, has the habit of giving little information to the users regarding the reasons of such failures, which are also rare and not always affect the biggest customers, companies. They always have an echo, though, in the minds of users who range from company managers to White House officials and add up to 8 million worldwide. In this latest outage, only BlackBerry Internet Service users were affected by the phenomenon of receiving delayed e-mail messages, while the users of enterprise services didn't feel a thing. The phone service also remained undisturbed, as well as text messaging. The last similar problem with BlackBerry services occured in April, when e-mail delivery also stopped for a few hours. The network crash this Friday interrupted what seemed to be a regular cycle for RIM, which has trouble once every year: before the April glitch, it had experienced an outage 12 and 22 months before. Research in Motion brings this service and the device to enjoy it with to 110 countries around the world, through 270 carriers. It's been around for eight years and its biggest rival is the iPhone.

Techies ponder computers smarter than us
by Delia Cruceru

Scientists and technologist fear that soon the artificial intelligence will soon overcome humans and movies with cyborgs and machines that think without human intervention will become true. At the Singularity summit from San Francisco, scientists gathered Sunday to discuss the future that seems so close to us: machines will become smarter than their makers, altering what it means to be human in ways almost impossible to conceive. They tried to warn that is the time to develop ethical guidelines to ensure that these new forms of super-powerful artificial intelligence are friendly to mankind. A robotics professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Rodney Brooks said "We and our world won't be us anymore," and that when it comes to computers "who is us and who is them is going to become a different sort of question." The co-founder of the Singularity Institute for Artificial Intelligence from Palo Alto, Eliezer Yudkowsky fears that "a brilliant inventor creates a self-improving but amoral artificial intelligence that turns hostile." Vernor Vinge, a California mathematician and science-fiction author, invented the word "singularity" which describes a technological transformation. The director of the Singularity Institute, Ray Kurzweil has even set a date for that: 2029. "Technology is heading here. It will predictably get to the point of making artificial intelligence," Yudkowsky said. "The mere fact that you cannot predict exactly when it will happen down to the day is no excuse for closing your eyes and refusing to think about it."

Apple reached the1 million mark sooner than expected
by Corina Ciubotaru

Apple has sold 1 million iPhones. And in the world of technology, that is a very big deal for a company that has just begun producing phones. They said the objective will be achieved by the end of September and it seems they did it faster, pointing out that it took two years for the iPod to reach this number of units sold. It still isn't clear though how the company from Cupertino came to this number; the figures released at the end of July and the ones from now don't really add up, but it seems they included the units sent to AT&T stores in the 1 million mark. After all, it's important to know what to say in a statement to keep the company image nice and spotless. Apple always knew how to do just that, create an image and stick to it; their gadgets look flawless and are designed to please the user with the highest attention to detail. They released the iPod Touch recently too at $399, which is basically an iPhone without the phone, and took the opportunity to slash the iPhone's price by $200, to get it also at $399. This of course led to a series of protests from previous iPhone owners but the move shouldn't be a surprise with the winter holidays coming. The iPhone is expected in Europe too soon and Apple is on its way to achieving the long-term goal of selling 10 million of them by the end of 2008.

Sony shows rolling music player
by Delia Cruceru

A new gadget called Rolly was launched on Monday by Sony. It's an egg shaped music player that rotates, it can flap its ends and flashes with colored lights synchronized with the music. The dancing music player will be available for now only in Japan by September 29 at the price of $353. The gadget is so small that it can fit in your palm and it has a standard 1 GB internal memory, a stereo speaker and a five hour battery life. Sony said in a statement that "users will be able to program the Bluetooth-capable product on a PC using software that analyzes music and produces choreography to match and then sends the programs to the Rolly." The device playbacks MP3, Atrac, or AAC songs or it can receive music streamed by a Bluetooth connection. The egg shaped gizmo has only 1 button an on/off switch, the rest of the functions are controlled by a pair of rings that circle its body. With one ring you can move from track to track or album to album, while other one controls the volume, and they're connected to motors that enable the Rolly to scoot around a table-top in tune to the music being played. You can program the device to have a desired choreography by a special PC program, or you can download packaged moves to tunes from a Sony website.
