The doctor who sends diagnostics by SMS
by Corina Ciubotaru

It was only a matter of time before the Internet produced the first online doctor, and his name is Dr. Jay Parkinson. This character who seems to be drawn straight out of a science-fiction movie, is a 31-year old man who graduated medical school with a huge debt and thought an Internet practice might be a good idea. He has become famous for the way he does his job and sparked controversy in medical circles as well as on TV shows. He has his own website filled with medical information and communicates with his patients via e-mail or text message. Some mild injuries get treated without actually seeing the patients, who can send him a picture of their cut or bruise and find out how they can help themselves. The subscription to Dr. Parkinson's service is $500 a year and currently, he has more than 50 patients signed up, most of them without insurance. Still, since he is aware of the limitations of this system, he only treats people between the ages of 18 and 40 and advises them to refrain from exposing private matters to him on the web, as he also does house calls. He doesn't want to be known as a Web doctor, but his practice is doing well, so he received offers from other doctors who would have wanted to be a part of it. It's basically the return to the true spirit of medicine, which is required to help all people equally, regardless of their health insurance or wealth.
