Strike in Hollywood Continues with no Settlement Plans on the Horizon
by Barbora Kasparova
The Writers Guild of America's strike, that's just entered its second week, seems not to be at its end yet. Who is to win the war is still unknown and the "peace talks" have not been announced so far either. The writers, who demand more money from the royalty payments asking for higher share from the DVD sales as well as at least some from internet sales, are holding some aces. Many of the shows cannot continue without being written from day to day, and thus the TV channels are loosing precious and faithful audiences. What about the actors' attitude? They some seem to be enjoying the situation & namely Jay Leno, and Eva Longoria of Desperate Housewives & and are backing the strikers, delivering them pizza and doughnuts and getting emotional over the situation. Even most of the executive producers have joined "the enemy", claiming solidarity. The advertising companies have expressed worries they might be harmed too, loosing eyeballs from the shows that are not being put on air due to the strike. Similar and the last strike of this kind occurred in 1988, lasted for 22 weeks and have cost the Hollywood studios about $5 billion. There is a big chance the studios must eventually give in to some kind compromise, because if the audience is not happy, the advertising industry is not pleased either, and who is to pay for the groceries then?
