PC sales are becoming very low in Japan
by Corina Ciubotaru

After the PC dominated the world for decades, being one of the most revolutionary inventions of the last century, it appears its time is finally up. In Japan, the electronics world trendsetter, PC sales have been experiencing a sharp decline for the past few years and there is no better replacement for them than miniaturized gadgets with the same capabilities. Japanese consumers now prefer to buy smartphones, wide-screen TVs, game consoles or digital video recorders and some of them haven't sent an e-mail from their computers for a long time. More than 50 percent of e-mails in Japan have been sent from a mobile phone and the biggest social networking sites like MySpace and Facebook or even YouTube can be accessed from mobiles. As a result, NEC's PC sales have declined by 6.2 percent last year, while Sony's were down by 10 percent compared to 2005. It's no wonder then that traditional PC manufacturers have now turned to other areas of technology: NEC is now more into mobile phones than PCs, Hitachi's computer division is still in existence but isn't bringing any profit and IBM has sold its division to Chinese company Lenovo two years ago. The remaining computer manufacturers are trying to stay in the game by focusing more on personalized miniature laptops and on desktops that look nothing like you would expect. The personal computers of the future should be very versatile and built for entertainment purposes if they're going to compete with video recorders that download movies straight from the Internet or MP3 players that get music automatically.
