Chris Cantell Discusses Technologies: Battle of the hackers
by Claudia Sonea
When the fight in land, on air or by sea ends, the cold war of the Internet starts. It is no joke; in fact on Tuesday they discovered that Russian hackers are targeting Georgian sites. It is hard for me to understand the purpose of such an act, not to mention why it happened in the US, Georgia’s ally, from all the other countries. This comes just after Russian President Dmitri Medvedev stopped all hostilities against Georgia, but shouldn’t affect the two countries the stupidity of some people who are too coward to show up and endanger people’s lives.
US would probably have some involvement in all this, because Internet attacks have been ordered to networks of computers created by hackers during the weekend for both Russian and Georgian Web sites. The Web site of Gary Kasparov, the Russian chess player and political activist, was hacked, the same way the Web site of the president of Georgia was, so both countries suffered, according to U.S.-based Shadowserver Foundation.
Tom Burling, acting chief executive of Tulip Systems Inc., said bogus traffic inflicted president.gov.ge and Web site of Georgia's parliament was replaced with an image Georgian president Mikhail Saakashvili and Adolf Hitler. The weird thing is that Nino Doijashvili, a Georgian, is actually the chief of Burling, what should we believe about that? FBI was informed about the attacks and they will take charge of the matter.
Meantime, the violence stopped and hopefully these incidents will not lead to new hostilities between the two countries. It was more a proof of immaturity and chauvinism and let us pray to God to not fulfill its purpose, whatever it may be.
