People escaping hurricane Gustav
by Livia Cseresova

Hurricane Gustav is scaring the inhabitants of some parts of United States. The people now try to rely on OnStar, the service of General Motors Corp., to help them escape the hurricane.

People calling for help were calm for the most part and just patiently asked for the quickest way out of one of the Gulf Coast cities as Hurricane Gustav turned northwest.

OnStar was started to be called by thousands and thousand of people early Saturday, and by the next day, Sunday, their number grew to over 3,000 per hour.

Brad Williams, a service manager for automaker’s motorist help line said that “There's a lot of people that are stranded on the evacuation routes.”
OnStar now put emergency plans in place at three call centers in Pontiac, Oshawa, Ontario and Charlotte, N.C. The managers of the company expected the calls from Sunday to reach 75,000, which is about two times as much as the numbers usually are on average Sundays.

The phone calls are sent to OnStar advisers, specially trained, many of whom were also working during Hurricane Katrina. Williams said: “They're more prepared. They know what questions have been asked.” The advisers were, according to Williams, equipped with maps, databases of hotels with vacancies and even locations of Red Cross emergency shelters.

Kim Dupee, a senior adviser in Charlotte spent almost all Sunday directing people of metro New Orleans. She said that the people calling “don’t want to get on the major highways because they know traffic is at a standstill. “ And that the situation is „steady. The calls don't stop. “

And with the storm moving closer and closer to the coast, advisers were getting ready for more panic calls and hysterical situation.
