How fed up I am with all those smartphones and constant mutual competing between Apple, RIM and other companies. Hewlett-Packard Co joined them in this match by announcing a $1.2 billion deal. HP is going to buy Palm Inc in belief it could resuscitate their position as the struggling smartphone maker. Initially speculated bidder was China’s Lenovo. That is why this takeover was surprise to many on Wall Street. The days when Palm used to dominate the market are long gone. It was surpassed by Apple’s iPhone and RIM’s BlackBerry and even their latest mobile operating system was neither too good to compete with Google’s Android software. As analyst at Ma! cquarie Research, Phil Cusick said: “Given how quickly Palm’s business was falling off and how fast their cash was going out the door, they’re lucky to get what they got.” There are other analysts that think the same, but there are also those who are more skeptical about HP’s ability to turn around Palm. As John Strand, chief executive of Strand Consult said: “If HP wants to have a global role in the mobile space, spending $1.2 billion in Palm is not the way. Palm has no brand outside the U.S., and it has no distribution outside the U.S.” As he added, Palm’s eight years effort to succeed in the mobile world simply failed as they were not able to face fierce competition. But executive vice president of HP’s computer division, Todd Bradley sees it clearly – heavy investment in sales, marketing, research and development should help bring Palm and HP back to their feet.
