Lenovo to focus on wireless computing
by Zuzana Zelenakova
Chinsese-based computer technology corporation Lenovo Group Limited said it would focus to a larger extent on wireless computing in the close future. Lenovo, founded in 1984, develops and manufactures desktops, notebook personal computers, servers and so on. In 2009, the company was reported to be the fourth largest seller of personal computers in the world. It announced recently that mobile Internet products will represent from 10 to 20 percent of its revenue in the following five years. Currently, the mobile Internet devices account only for small percentage of annual sales. "The market in the smartphone space is just emerging in China," said president and Chief Operatin! g Officer Rory Read. "It's just the beginning." The company realized that the traditional PCs market will be overwhelmed by the mobile Internet device market very soon, in about five years as Chief Executive Yang Yuanqing said. Lenovo sold its mobile phones unit only to get it back last year in order to catch up with the latest trend on the market. Similarly as other computer companies, it introduced its own Android-based touchscreen smartphone in January. The Lephone is quite a gadget to look at with one outstanding feature that immediately catches your eye, and that is an interesting circular design keyboard. With 3.7-inch 480x800-pixel display, 3G, Wi-Fi, A-GPS and 3.0-megapixel video-capable camera it was recognized as a very intriguing product for a company that is not primarily a phone manufacturer. "I'm optimistic that the economic environment will continue to improve," said Read. "I also see that the key business accounts - corporate and large enterprise, which are! an important part of our business, are also improving and the! ir activ ities are getting better." Lenovo was hit hard by the global crisis experiencing three loosing quarters in a row before rebounding and therefore seeks to expand its customer base with focus on wireless computing and to become China´s number one, as this country accounts for almost half of Lenovo´s global sales. On Chinese market it faces strong competition from Hewlett-Packard and Dell.
