More and more people use cell phone GPS
by Zuzana Zelenakova

GPS, or Global Positioning System, was originally developed for the military purposes, to help soldiers, planes, vessels to determine their accurate location. Businesses soon spotted its commercial potential and turned GPS into a fast-growing industry. Well-known GPS devices manufacturers include Navman, TomTom, Garmin, Mio and others. Mainly following the events of 11 September, 2001 regulations encouraging mobile phone tracking were introduced and GPS technology was integrated into the cell phones. According to the research firm comScore, more and more people in Europe use their cell phones for satellite navigation in cars. The threat for personal navigation device maker! s is increasing as call phone manufacturers are starting to offer free navigation on their phones. "The higher incidence of A-GPS usage in cars suggests that the superior speed and precision in these devices are being used for more than just identifying locations -- they are being used as full in-car navigation systems," says comScore analyst Alistair Hill. "That these services offer similar functionality to premium services without the significant price-tag has certainly contributed to their early success," he added. The highest growth rate within Europe´s string five, UK, Germany, France, Spain, Italy was reported in the United Kingdom where the increase was 68 percent as compared to the previous year. "Among those who accessed maps via their mobile devices for the three month period ending February 2010, most (68.2 percent) accessed those services in a car or other vehicle," detailed ComScore. "35.3 percent of the total users accessed the services while using public! transport; and 27 percent did so while walking, running or cy! cling." Separate personal navigation device makers claim that most people still prefer separate device rather than using their phone, however, the research mentioned above suggests the trend is changing and that it is changing very quickly.
