It seems to be clear that video will become the crucial application that defines smartphones. The popularity of smartphones such as the Blackberry, iPhone from Apple or Doid from Motorola has grown. Smarphones are rich in features, which means that they use 30 times more bandwidth as regular mobile phones. Therefore there is need to develop more efficient delivery to prevent video and others app from choking airwaves. Huge use of video caused more dropped calls and more congestion. Carriers are forced upgrade their networks and buy more wireless spectrum. Video is definitely a big challenge to networks. Now the 3G video is not that demanding, but what will happen in ! future when smartphones upgrade to screens looking like HD televisions? RIM's BlackBerry is one of the smartphones that is quite bandwidth-light. The company was seeking a faster, more secure mobile email service and has decided to route most of emails through the company's own servers. Furthermore, RIM sends BlackBerry's web browsing, Facebook, Twitter and data from others apps through its own servers. This way browsing and using apps on a BlacBerry is about five times as efficient as on other smartphones and it is also saving the bandwiddth. RIM is planning to invest in technology that would provide higher efficiency. In 2006 RIM bought SlipStream, which specializes in data acceleration, compression and network optimization technology. Thanks to the acquisition, RIM got to some great technologies for compressing everything – web content or even video. For RIM, the research is very important and they are sure that it always brings good fruit and therefor! e is worth of investments.
