New tablet device on the market
by Milota Sidorova
Tablet device market has been enriched by another, however long expected new-comer Research In Motion. While it's been dominated by Apple's iPad with two rivals from Samsung and Dell, real competition was expected to begin with RIM Blackberry's PlayBook. Seven inch touch sensible screen device with dual facing cameras, WiFi and Bluetooth is supposed to substitute iPad in many situations. But maybe not exactly substitute – while this market will be established and stabilized overtime, the main feature dividing sucessful from loosers will be the services and application package. Devices will differ only with software and its opportunities. While it may be problem with ! iPad, since Apple's platform is rather closed, PlayBook was cheerished for its relative openness – making it more accessible for many application builders (games, dictionaries, calendar and thousands of potential applications). PlayBook weights around 400 grams, has dual-core, one gigahertz processor running on QNX kernel with operating system able to accept BlackBerry OS 6. Basically PlayBook reflects BlackBerry, but offers bigger screen to view and edit documents. And while RIM is struggling to reestablish its position after unsuccessful Torch smartphone release in the summer. The product is expected to reach corporate customers and developers the next month, but the official market launch is scheduled on January. That means a hidden strategy, since RIM is certainly going to miss major sale Christmas season then most of actions and sales usually happen. The question is how is RIM going to promote its PlayBook to effectively attract already supported market? Tablet! device series should be completed by another product from Hew! lett-Pac kard and Toshiba.
