Messages safekeeping
by Lenka Filipova
Due to revelation of flirty and sexual text messages between Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and a top aide, many people who might be a part even of a more common discussion via mobile phone will be on the verge of hesitation whether the messages they have sent are being stored somewhere for the future purposes or will disappear in short time. Probably, the majority of us would vote for the vanishing of the message text, but Kilpatrick's and Chief of Staff Christine Beatty's would do their best to make it less volatile. In contrast, a spokeswoman of Verizon Wireless Erica Sevilla expressed her opinion that people felt more comfortable when the information was not stored and thus it could not be used against them in the future. AT&T Inc. keeps the information about message's text up to 72 hours till the delivery is successful. In the case of unsuccessful sending, the message is no longer a part of a system and there is no possibility to retrieve it again. Last summer, Kilpatrick and Beatty were engaged in a trial concerning their romantic relation via phone. They both denied any possible ties, except professional. In spite of this fact, it was published by the Detroit Free Press that 14,000 messages were sent on Beatty's pager. The city-issued pager a product provided by Mississippi wireless company Sky Tel. Sky Tel's spokesman refused to express any attitude toward this issue. As David Chamberlain, a wireless analyst with Scottsdale, Ariz.-based In-Stat. said, Sky Tel's products are more familiar with e-mail than text-messages, where messages are being stored. Even though, technology moved to SMS (short massage service), some governments stayed loyal to the Sky Tel services as there was no distinguishable difference. He said that it only "required people essentially to have a second, very expensive message-only account." Thus, it is really necessary to do everything just to make people restful about their privacy.
