Online workout
by Claudia Sonea
Beyond all things, technology breaks patterns everyday and its miracles never cease to amaze. In Canada, there has been a recent experiment that tests if the new Wii workout, the top-selling videogame console can get people to work up a sweat. At Dalhousie University in the East Coast city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, twenty eight students confronted the Nintendo Co console up against more traditional forms of exercise to see if playing games could actually be considered a workout. The 28 students in the Applications in Exercise Physiology class tested the impact of playing the Wii boxing game for 30 minutes against a 30-minute walk in a local park and an equal amount of time doing a boxercise video. During the test their heart rate was measured as well as how hard they had worked out for all three activities. As a result, the video console convinced coach potatoes to get up and exercise, but did not pass the test when it comes to cardiovascular workout. Justin White, a fourth-year kinesiology student stated that as a mean of losing weight is good as a starting point, while for cardiovascular fitness another alternative must be looked up. Jo Welch, the professor of the class, added that it is very good because it is actually made by people and it's interactive, thus convincing the lazy ones to get up and get started. If the experiment did not convince you, then the Wii Fit, an exercise game that allows the user to perform a variety of exercises- and tracks changes in their body-mass index- that Nintendo plans to release next year will definitely get your attention. They surely left me breathless and urging for one of those. Enjoy!
