Nokia Revolution
by Claudia Sonea

Between September 2-3, Nokia held its annual Nokia World event where not only new products where unveiled, but also future plans. The main target for the world’s largest handset makers is to get a bigger steak on the US phone market where it has been struggling to get at least 10 percent. What are the steps taken by Nokia to boost its popularity on the US market? First of all, it launched new products like Nokia N 97 mini, X3 and X6O, it bought U.S. digital maps firm Navteq and other smaller firms for its Internet services, signed a deal to make billing available through AT&T and it is opening up to the soc! ial networks that seem to have invaded the markets all over the world. More important it is the fact that Nokia will open its software platforms to third-party developers in an attempt to have a direct connection with the users and their tastes, as well as finally launching those additional services: music, application store billing, games download. In Stuttgart where the event was held Facebook representatives introduced the new partnership which adds to the features of the newest phones- mentioned above- a Facebook application allowing users to update their location, a version of Facebook "Connect" for mobile phones that runs on Nokia's own operating system. Facebook’s logo is even added to Nokia's latest handsets which have as main focus the music application and the touch screen. By opening to third-party developers and buying smaller technology firms, Nokia is planning to change its rigid Symbian pla! tform and S60 user interface. The newly acquired company Troll! tech pro ved to be very useful in making a new handset available to a Linux operating system, and creating a Web-based developer kit that uses popular programming languages like HTML, Java and CCS. Nokia has even more surprises for its customers with a new "Booklet" 3G laptop and a partnership with Microsoft that will enable Office software on Nokia’s handsets. Stay connected and you will be most definitely taken aback by other surprises that Nokia has yet to reveal.
