Harvard's Gates launching national black newspaper
by Zuzana Moravcova

On Monday, the Washington Post Co. released a new online magazine about genealogy, aimed at a black audience, featuring commentary from leading black writers. The magazine is called "The Root," and began coming together in October. The web site is a brain child of Harvard University professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. and Post Co. Chairman Donald Graham. When Graham got the idea of The Root to Gates several months ago, "it took me precisely one nanosecond to say, 'I would love to do that,'" Gates said in an interview on Friday. Gates, director of the W.E.B. Du Bois Institute for African and African American Research at Harvard, told The Associated Press: "We see ourselves as a daily black newspaper in a magazine format with three channels â€" news, views, and roots, and it's the roots channel that ... makes us completely unique." He added that the goal is to provide a forum "as diverse as the black barber shop or black beauty parlor," and that the genealogy component is key to the magazine's mission. "It's vital for African Americans to be able to recreate their family trees," he said. The Root is gong to feature news and opinions on black issues in the United States and worldwide and to include a genealogy application designed to help black users build their family trees. The way Gate got an idea of launching this kind of magazine reaches back to his childhood, when he first saw copies of the black-oriented Baltimore Afro-American in his local black-run barber shop, he started longing for a national black newspaper...The Root will be a 21st-century version of a national black newspaper, Gates said, featuring articles from notable black writers, such as the New Yorker's Malcolm Gladwell. Among other prominent blacks who have launched news and information sites aimed at black users, radio star Tom Joyner launched BlackAmericaWeb in 2001 that features news and commentary on issues of interest to black users. "I am happy to be joining the distinguished company of Tavis Smiley and Tom Joyner and Ebony and Jet," Gates said, and added that The Root will be unique because it will be the only black-oriented news and commentary site to have the genealogy application. He expects The Root to lose money initially, "but hopefully not for as many years as Slate." Slate, founded in 1996, did not experience its first full year of profitability until 2007. The Root has signed up HBO and Coca-Cola as initial sponsors.

Computers run still faster
by Ivana Bruderova

It's not possible to stop a development of computers and computer science. If you know the Moore's Law you will not be surprised by following information. The new invention of analysts and programmers will allow computers to go much faster than before. The answer is in microprocessor chips. A speed of chips is reaching almost 4 gigahertz ( 4 billion cycles per second) and probably it's not possible to make it higher because when the chips run faster it's heat will fry themselves. The chips with two, three or four processors are available. The idea of analysts is to add more "cores" - the copies of the processor circuity itself. The computers usually have only one processor which make all operations. With adding parallel processors could complicated applications for instance some video games run faster. Although it sounds good it's not easy to realize."Most application programs were written to run with one processor and adding parallelism is not trivial."told Tom Halfhill senior analyst for the Microprocessor Report newsletter in San Jose, California. "The typically end-user applications have no facilities for using multiply cores." he continued. For the ordinary users it will be senseless to own computers with parallel cores, because in fact they don't need it. The speed of new chips will be noticeable only with more complicated applications. Analysts predict the PC with the parallel processors will be able to reconfigure itself according the necessity. For instance when the user is playing video game some of the cores could convert themselves to graphic processors to manage the workload. The parallel chips in computers are not a brand new idea. They are used in Internet traffic or cell phone tower traffic.

Messages safekeeping
by Lenka Filipova

Due to revelation of flirty and sexual text messages between Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and a top aide, many people who might be a part even of a more common discussion via mobile phone will be on the verge of hesitation whether the messages they have sent are being stored somewhere for the future purposes or will disappear in short time. Probably, the majority of us would vote for the vanishing of the message text, but Kilpatrick's and Chief of Staff Christine Beatty's would do their best to make it less volatile. In contrast, a spokeswoman of Verizon Wireless Erica Sevilla expressed her opinion that people felt more comfortable when the information was not stored and thus it could not be used against them in the future. AT&T Inc. keeps the information about message's text up to 72 hours till the delivery is successful. In the case of unsuccessful sending, the message is no longer a part of a system and there is no possibility to retrieve it again. Last summer, Kilpatrick and Beatty were engaged in a trial concerning their romantic relation via phone. They both denied any possible ties, except professional. In spite of this fact, it was published by the Detroit Free Press that 14,000 messages were sent on Beatty's pager. The city-issued pager a product provided by Mississippi wireless company Sky Tel. Sky Tel's spokesman refused to express any attitude toward this issue. As David Chamberlain, a wireless analyst with Scottsdale, Ariz.-based In-Stat. said, Sky Tel's products are more familiar with e-mail than text-messages, where messages are being stored. Even though, technology moved to SMS (short massage service), some governments stayed loyal to the Sky Tel services as there was no distinguishable difference. He said that it only "required people essentially to have a second, very expensive message-only account." Thus, it is really necessary to do everything just to make people restful about their privacy.

The pink BlackBerry Pearl & a magic between handsets
by Milota Sidorova

TORONTO (Reuters) & A new handset competitor to Apple's iPhones, the Pink BlackBerry Pearl produced by Research In Motion (RIM.TO) (RIMM.O), using technologies of Verizon wireless, a global leader in wireless innovation has appeared into the retail consumer market. The latest version of this smart phone reached the US market in June 2007. Buying Blackberry Pearl, you can use all sort of typical cellphone features like Voice Activated Dialing, speakerphone, and noise and echo cancellation technology for clearer calls, Wireless broadband (EV-DO) connectivity for high-speed data transfers, Bluetooth technologies, camera, media players, allowing customers to manage music, pictures and video between PC and their pink BlackBerry Pearl. The initial prize, allocated in 2006 was around $200 is now lowered by some carriers using long-term contracts, which make them more affordable. RIM established its name by supplying blocky handsets secure sending protected e-mails. While those products were used mostly by lawyers and politicians, the new way of BlackBerry marketing targets mostly teenagers and young people. According to RIM report, more than a third of company subscribers Despite of a desirable product, some analysts suggest that BlackBerry spending could be scaled back, if the United States, RIM's biggest market slips into a recession, causing a declaration of growth. These opinions are based on a fact, of decreasing RIM shares more than 15 percent this year. In RIM's co-Chief Executive, Jim Balsillie's belief, there is no real danger, since cellphones are no longer seen as luxury items, people wouldn't part with the BlackBerry so easily. "The cellphone is kind of one of the last things people give up," he noted.

The Good Samaritan
by Claudia Sonea

Believe it or not, there are still honest people in the world. Alan Murphy, an insurance underwriter, who lives in Australia, discovered this secret on a trip to his friends from New York. As a trouble through which many tourists went, he also forgot something, unfortunately it was a $500 digital camera and he wasn't expecting to ever see it again. However, he had a marvelous surprise. Murphy's destiny is somewhat connected to that of Brian Ascher, a 26-year-old law student at New York University. Brian's fiancée, Erika Gunderson, who finances for Bear Stearns Cos., found in a taxi on his way back home a Canon digital camera and because the taxi driver did not remembered anything about the previous clients, she decided to take it home. Don't be surprised, most people would take it home; still she did it without any intention of keeping it, but to find the rightful owner. At this point Brian steps in. Due to his winter break, the honest future lawyer (a unique combination) had enough time to take the trouble to search for the owner. In his quest, he used as evidence the 350 pictures and the two videos on the camera. Also, he reported a matching missing camera to the city's Taxi and Limousine Commission, found on 31 December. To point out that not everyone is so honest, at his ads in lost-and-found sections of Craigslist, the Brazilian couple that answered said they lost a camera in October, but unfortunately they weren't so lucky to find it. The entire break he spent it tracing the camera's owner, even his mother Nancy and his sister Emily Rann got involved. Emily noticed on the camera pictures of a doorman of Radisson Hotel and she managed to persuade an employee to give her an email address. However, it wasn't the owner. According to the saying, third time is a charm, Brian succeeded to trace the path of the owner up to Standings, a bar near Burp Castle, and from there to Playwrights, a bar in New York. There was Sarah Casey and her sister Jeanette, who hosted relatives and friends from Ireland. Among them was none other then Murphy, an Irish moved to Australia, who just discovered that people can still be decent and honest. Bravo to Brian, the Good Samaritan!

Bill Gates's philanthropic focus
by Zuzana Zelenakova

Microsoft chairman and co-founder Bill Gates has always been generous in sharing his enormous fortune with those in need. In 2000, he and his wife founded Bill&Melinda Gates Foundation, which provides funds for college scholarships, disease prevention and other causes. It is reported that since 2000 Bill gave away about $29 million to charities. On Thursday he only confirmed his goodwill. On the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting 2008 in Davos, Switzerland he called for 'creative capitalism' to help the 1 billion poorest ones. Businesses should adopt new approach in order to suppress global poverty and diseases. "We have to find the aspects of capitalism that serve wealthier people serve poorer people as well. I like to call this idea creative capitalism," ha said at the meeting. He suggested several ways for corporations "to stretch the reach of market forces to bring the benefits of science and technology to everyone." In time, delivering different products to the poor at affordable prices could be their way of making money. At Davos it was Bill Gates's last speech in position of full-time employee of Microsoft. He will retire at the end of June and concentrate on his charity foundation.

Quiet killer?
by Zuzana Valkova

When you are looking at the people on the streets, sometimes you can see that maybe half of them are on the phone. Its inseparable part of us. But for the last few years we can hear more about the health impact for us. I was surprised how many studies are about this problem in the whole world. So what have they found out so far? There are two main kinds of hazard. The first one is directly from mobile phones. They are using electromagnetic radiation in microwave range. I don't know what does it mean exactly, but the word radiation is enough for me to start to be afraid. Scientist found the main diseases or problems which it causes. It can be cancer, sleep disturbances, headaches, loss of memory and attention or stress. This is not all, but I think these are very good examples of what could happen to us. Second kind of hazard is from base stations. Usually it is the place where is antenna which is at the top of high tower and it sends and catch reception and signal to or from mobile phones. These towers have a big power density, so it's very dangerous live near them. In some countries this is not regulated, so if you look you can see the tower next to small house or in the middle of a village. This can cause the same damage for the people like the cell phones, even worse. What can we do to protect ourselves? Use hands free, don't carry mobile phone on your body, try to make a shorter calls and if it's possible don't make a call inside of a car or building.

FCC's airwaves auction has begun
by Milota Sidorova

One of the most regarded actions in the world of wireless networks has started this Thursday. An federal airwaves auction, run by the Federal Communications Commission is expected to pump at least $10 billion for the government. The auction's time limit is expected to last from four to eight weeks, while anonymous bidding. The winner, known at the end should create a new national wireless service, emerging the preparations in late 2009. Among the total number of 214 challengers, figure Google (GOOG), the online search giant, telecommunications companies AT&T (T) and Verizon (VZ) as well as private investor Paul Allen, Microsoft's (MSFT) co-founder. The feature of the low frequency 700 megahertz band that make them so attractive is, that its signals can reach long distances, penetrate walls, while carrying a lot of data. It means the advantage of reducing costs for the installing new antennas. Kevin Martin, Chairman of FCC claims that these airwaves could be the building blocks for the new generation of wireless broadband. He also quoted that he wasn't sure about the timing of an auction, but they were required to hold it by law. The impact of new universal wireless network service for the customers should promote better availability of broadband Internet service to rural areas and more vivid video transition in cities. The condition of FCC also declares that the services of those airwaves to any handset or software a subscriber wants to see. According to the Federal Communications Commission, an auction took its second-round this morning and the bids are currently about $2.78 billion. They also claimed that the bid offers rose up 15 percent from a previous round.

The Rare Art Of Getting Lost
by Kamila Moravcikova

I'm the crowned queen of losing everything. Every single day I spend desperate minutes by tracking my glasses, my purse, my favorite scarf, etc. Every day there is something I can't find and it's perhaps lost forever. What's even worse, it is not unusual for me to completely get lost. No maps, no GPS can be helpful. I'm absolutely untalented when it comes to the "orientation sense". Straight road, no turning left or right and after few minutes I have no idea where I am. I was gifted in so many ways (I'm good in keeping secret, for example), but to get somewhere I've never been before is an nightmare for me. And also for my family and friends because they spend hours and hours trying to explain me how can I get from point A to point B and in spite of their effort I get lost immediately. And then they have to handle my wretched and hysterical phone calls and direct me to the right place. Well, this my lamentable weakness isn't only ruining my friendships, it even causes the fact that I am always late. Fortunately, good news are coming for (yet) iPhone or iPod Touch owners. These things can figure out your location via Wi-Fi signal and by using information from Google easily direct you. And this is just beginning. Maybe one day it will be no big deal to google "where are my keys" or "where the hell am I right now".

Apple stable despite the shaking stock market
by Martina Harvanova

The bold changes in the U. S. stock market reported the last week were mostly predicted to weaken the position of the majority of American corporations. The prognosis didn't come true in the case of Apple Inc., luckily for them. Also the investors don't need to feel nervous about their shares The company, formerly Apple Computers Inc., was introduced January 3, 1977. Its first big success came with the Macintosh released in 1984. It was the first commercially successful personal computer to feature a mouse and a graphical user interface rather than a command line interface. The golden age of Apple arrived from 1989 to 1991 although it needed to compete with still more developing and demanded Microsoft Windows that was incompatible with the Apple products. The breakthrough occurred 1997 as Apple's CEO Steve Jobs announced the company's entering into a partnership with Microsoft to releasing new versions of Microsoft Office for the Macintosh. The year was also a step towards new technologies, because the Apple Store was introduced to provide customers with on-line retail store. Apple began to occupy the first market positions mostly around the beginning of the new century. Between early 2003 and January 2006, the price of a share of Apple's stock increased more than tenfold, from a little more than US$6 per share to more than US$80 per share. On January 13, 2006, Apple' surpassed Dell. And how does it look like nowadays? For the fiscal year (beginning from October) of 2007 the company sold 2.3 million Macs, this year was a record one also for the sales of iPods and hot iPhone. The worldwide annual sales of Apple are represented with the number of $24.01 billion. No matter what analysts say about the Apple's shares on the stock market, the revenues for the last months distinctly show the popularity of Apple Inc. Its brands are deemed the most popular among the customers and its sales have never been so sharp. Mainly, thanks to its philosophy and comprehensive aesthetic design Apple is constantly winning a distinct reputation in the electronics industry.

Space traveling
by Zuzana Valkova

If you love traveling and you have enough of this planet, you can leave. Or if you have someone you cant stand, send him or her away. I'm not kidding. If you have "only" 30 million $, you have no problem, you can see the whole planet from one place. Just make an appointment and they put you or someone else on the list. But there is a little problem with that list. Only one travel agency can provide you this trip, its American agency Space Adventures. Only provider of transportation is the Russian Space Agency. For those 30 mill.$ they can take you on the board of Soyuz spacecraft to the International Space Station, where you can spend 10 days. Their list is full for the next two years. The first space tourist was Denis Tito, American millionaire and scientist, who spent 7 days in the space on ISS. After him there were few people, but after tragedy of American Columbia spaceship, Russian Agency had to stop it, because their aircrafts were the only available transport for cosmonauts. It was still important to get to ISS, because there are some scientists all the time. You have to train your body to be prepared for the very hard flight, and then for the stay in weightlessness. It's important to pass the tests, without them you are not allowed to travel. I still have this question in my mind: Is it worth it? What can you do in space for 10 days, when you even cant come out? Enjoying the view? All the astronauts, who were in the space before, are telling that looking at the earth from the space is the most beautiful thing they have ever seen. It must be something about it.

Digital broadcasting instead of airwaves
by Barbora Misakova

A big change with broadcasting transition, which is going to become digital had started being realized after more than 10 years. This Thursday starts auctioning off the airwaves which should bring billions for the U.S. Treasury. By words of Kevin Martin, Federal Communications Commission Chairman, this one auction is the most important of all auctions which is going to be made in foreseeable future. These airwaves are these days used by television UHF. This airwaves system was called by analysts "beach-front property" and it enable carry information on long distances and even penetrate walls. After transition on digital broadcasting these airwaves should be used for emergency communications which need they space badly. Martin is very optimistic about this new idea, he even calls it "key building block" which should provide wireless Internet services so customers will be able to anything ranging from watching TV to transmit plenty of data, doesn't matter when and where they need to. But there are also skeptical ones who are not so optimistic about it. First of all there is that withdrawal of a firm responsible for constructing a national public network, and then the second reason of their skepticism is that more than 70 percent of Americans have no clue what is this good for. If everything works as it should more than $15 billion is expected to be brought from this auction and this money should be also effectively used. First of all a part of them should go to the general fund which will help to offset the federal budged deficit, another amount will be invested into coupon program. But much more funds will be used for emergency communications' grants and improving communication among public safety agencies. Commission also planed to create a public safety communications network. The plans are big but it all depends on money and bidders. One of the bidders was Frontline Wireless LLC which should make a bid of more than $1 billion, but it failed. So the new bidder, able to pay for and construct this public network, is expected. If anyone is able to offer at least $ 4.6 billion bid it will be a winner.

Last.fm came up with free music on-demand
by Zuzana Zelenakova

On Wednesday the social music website Last.fm definitely earned some good points in the eyes of music lovers. It announced that it is introducing a new streaming service for fans which will enable them to listen to their favourite songs on-demand for free. If they want to download it onto a computer or music player they can buy it through Amazon.com. "We are trying to make all music accessible without people having to log in or pay for it," said Martin Stiksel, founder of Last.fm. The project was set up in partnership with four major music companies and over 150,000 labels and artists and is funded by advertising revenue shared with these music companies. The fact that Last.fm is now owned by US television network CBS Corp, which bought it last year for $280 million, helped a lot in the discussions. The move came almost six years after Last.fm started to contact music companies to license songs to stream on its site. For now people using the site have to sit at their computers, but spokesman for Last.fm stated that in the future the similar service should be available also on mobile phones. So whether you like Beyonce, Nickleback or Amy Winehouse the doors has just opened for you. Better find the nearest computer and enjoy them!

Online workout
by Claudia Sonea

Beyond all things, technology breaks patterns everyday and its miracles never cease to amaze. In Canada, there has been a recent experiment that tests if the new Wii workout, the top-selling videogame console can get people to work up a sweat. At Dalhousie University in the East Coast city of Halifax, Nova Scotia, twenty eight students confronted the Nintendo Co console up against more traditional forms of exercise to see if playing games could actually be considered a workout. The 28 students in the Applications in Exercise Physiology class tested the impact of playing the Wii boxing game for 30 minutes against a 30-minute walk in a local park and an equal amount of time doing a boxercise video. During the test their heart rate was measured as well as how hard they had worked out for all three activities. As a result, the video console convinced coach potatoes to get up and exercise, but did not pass the test when it comes to cardiovascular workout. Justin White, a fourth-year kinesiology student stated that as a mean of losing weight is good as a starting point, while for cardiovascular fitness another alternative must be looked up. Jo Welch, the professor of the class, added that it is very good because it is actually made by people and it's interactive, thus convincing the lazy ones to get up and get started. If the experiment did not convince you, then the Wii Fit, an exercise game that allows the user to perform a variety of exercises- and tracks changes in their body-mass index- that Nintendo plans to release next year will definitely get your attention. They surely left me breathless and urging for one of those. Enjoy!

Revolving around relationships
by Claudia Sonea

It's good to have friends and no few songs had this theme. LinkedIn Corp. co-founder Reid Hoffman, confesses that it has never been something more truthful than this and that is due to the fact that most of his fortune comes from good relationships. His way to success is due to a college friendship who led him to PayPal that was sold in 2002 for $1.5 billion to eBay Inc. He continued to growth his fortune and success throughout investments in other Internet startups he discovered through friends and former colleagues. Using his PayPal experience Hoffman started an online business-networking service that helps professionals like him realize the value of their contacts from the past and present- Linkedln. In it is useful to people who know each other elsewhere more easily meet others who might help their careers. In spite of the fact that it is not so fun like Facebook or other social network, the site doubled its user's number getting to 18 million people that now have profiles on it. Although in 2008 has projected revenue of $75 million to $100 million, Hoffman as LinkedIn's chairman and largest shareholder five years after starting the company said the Mountain View-based company will probably file for an initial public bid if he will not change his mind in the meantime and sell it to one of the buyers that already presented interest in the matter. former LinkedIn executive Keith Rabois suggests for Hoffman to buy an IPO in order to create a bigger buzz about the service if he wants to reach Facebook with 60 million users and a market value of $ 15 billion. Still, the secret is that Hoffman has a stake in Facebook and he introduced some of its features to Linkedln, allowing LinkedIn users to display pictures next to their personal profiles and to open up the site for outsiders to post mini-applications, known as widgets, designed to help people with common connections to share information. Hoffman rarely misses opportunities and the greatest regret he has is that he hasn't taken the chance to invest in Youtube and lost a lot of money when Google purchase it for $1.76 billion in 2006. Nevertheless, his good eye in building relationships got him YouTube founders Chad Hurley and Steve Chen, who worked with Hoffman at PayPal. There is also a saying that everyone in Silicon Valley is connected to Reid Hoffman. As a conclusion, by using the famous title of a show: It's good to be Reid Hoffman!

The Internet Voting
by Daniela Simkova

The analysts made their predictions for the Iowa caucuses. According to the forecasts, the Iowa caucuses won by Sen. Barak Obama, were supposed to be won by Sen. Hillary Clinton. This fact assures us that analysts were mistaking again. Sen. Barak Obama won the Iowa caucuses thanks to the Internet voting. Obama was voted through the Internet, including votes from the frequently visited social networks as a Facebook or MySpace. This voting served out, because he became a first candidate who lead in the Internet metrics. The majority of his voters were mostly young people, young voters and women under the age 30. Sen. Barak Obama's victory in Iowa ensured that the consumed work on the Web had paid out. Although it raised question whether online voters could transfer into offline voters. New Hampshire caucuses indicate that online support is not enough. Barak Obama was 10 or even more percent behind Hillary Clinton in the New Hampshire caucuses. Hillary Clinton benefited from the young voters as well as Barak Obama in Iowa but she did not manage the energizing through the Internet. The results in New Hampshire and Iowa show that both, Democrats and Republicans, are strong partners in the presidential race and chances are wide open. The campaign moves next to the South Carolina.

Is there any meaningful guarantee?
by Lenka Filipova

It seems that the very common word "guarantee" is used frequently but without precise understanding. Best Buy's buy-online-pickup-store guarantee says that you will get $10 if the order is not given to you within one minute of their confirmation e-mail presentation. However, the discussion arises when it comes to legitimacy. Is it legal to offer such guarantee if the retailer controls the term? The guarantee does not include some products, exactly those that are cheaper than $10. And what is more, the time waiting in line is excluded surely too. If it promises quick entry in and out by the program, then the fault can not be attributed to the tailor, especially in the case of very famous holidays like Christmas or Easter. What is more, there seems to appear more and more clumsy parts of the guarantee when it comes to closer look at it. It is really interesting to find out what is exactly meant by "one minute" from Best Buy's point of view. "One minute" is started to be measured just after you firstly present your photo ID, then you buy your credit card and you identify yourself by confirmation e-mail or valid number to Best Buy. And yes, you are right; this is the exact time when the "one minute" is going to be timed. "Best Buy will track the time, which will end when you have the product in your possession." And here the question comes, what if the store will not make customer possible to present all of these just till the good is dispatched? It does not then correlate with the sense of guarantee, is not it? All in all, is there any meaning in providing guarantee except the fact that ensures you that you will never pay?

Marketing fight between XO and Classmate PC
by Martina Harvanova

A quite successful project One Laptop Per Child knows how to win publicity. Whether it is a bad or a lucky one, OLPC is mentioned among such companies as Apple or HBO in the press, despite its not-profit-making focus on the help to developing countries. The target is to mediate education of computing and technologies to kids who don't have the facility to own or even to have an access to new technologies. The current issue for the OLPC is the technical equipment, because already in the beginning of the 2008 certain troubles occurred with the case. First of all, a Nigerian company was suing the OLPC over a claimed patent violation. And then it was announced that Intel decided to break the marriage with the OLPC. The first laptop used by OLPC was an ultra-low-cost, flexible and responsive XO. And already this decision of OLPC to use rather XO than Intel's Classmate PC shamed Intel and its dreams to get great PR through the cooperation with OLPC. Although Classmate PC still provides its service to kids in developing countries, its popularity is overcoming a gradual shift. Now, there are two competitors both serving with low-cost laptops designed for children, but on the other hand, both working on completely different systems. Technicians claim there is definitely no comparison between XO and Classmate PC. The XO with its groundbreaking capabilities and wireless networking features has a potential to change all future laptops, while the Classmate PC is basically just a very standard small-form-factor laptop with few innovations. However, its advantages, for example simple familiarity, prove it has its stable spot among computers of these features. Apparently, the innovative XO laptop sweeps the board and that is exactly what Intel is upset about. The whole marketing about both laptops seems to get more complicated. The public is a powerful factor. And all producers and competitors know it. The issue is who is going to be the seen as the most sympathetic and helpful one.

Internet, parents and kids
by Barbora Misakova

I had been many times witness of a fight between my father and computer, sometimes it even looked like my father was trying to make a deal with my PC just for a few minutes of cooperation. But I have to admit that my father and also mother are those skilled ones in the work with computers. Though there are still people who are afraid of any kind of technology and they not even can't work with it, but they even don't want to. Many youngsters find it good because they finally have their own turf where it's them who are on the horseback. Kids have their best friends in technology, computers and Internet. These things help them with school, because still more and more information can be found on the web, they entertain them by playing lot of virtual games, downloading movies and music, enable them to communicate with friends and also family when they are not at home but also in some cases enable them to exclude adults from their own world especially when they are not able to communicate with them. But these days the second wave of technology knowledge is coming. Adults are not only trained in the companies they work for, but there is also higher attention from their side to understand how these machines work and how can be useful for them. I think this interest is connected with fact that life of kids is more connected to internet and technology than to their parents. This fact leads adults to realize that if they want to be closer to their own children and want to understand them, they have to know how to work with computers and use other devices such as mobile phones and so on. However reaction of the youngsters was opposite & they think it is "creepy" when they are talking with friends through MySpace or FaceBook and their parents suddenly appear there too. Kids just don't want their parents to see what they are talking about with friends, what videos they look on YouTube or for which pictures they have on their profiles. After all for the younger kids it is not cool to have mom or dad among their virtual friends. But kids couldn't see probably the most important and major reason of their parent's interest in technology & danger. Although most of youngsters will never accept the fact that Internet is not private social network they know it. Nevertheless most of them are too careless to realize real danger of it. That's why is the knowledge of using it and real using of technology the best way how to protect our children.

The first one.
by Zuzana Valkova

What do you think, which computer was the first commercially successful one? I would think that was some piece made by Bill Gates and his company. But reality is a bit different. The first one was made by Apple and it was called Macintosh. Its started to sell in 1984 and it was really simple why it was so popular. The creators decided to use pictures instead of text and lines. For many people this was the right way how to learn to use personal computer. In 1990s when Microsoft started to be stronger than Apple expected, they were loosing, but now it seems that they can be stronger again. They produce MP3 players and cell phones, but the main scope are desktops and laptops. When you are watching Hollywood movies, which computer or laptop the main character has? Almost always its Apple. They are becoming more popular. They have very unique design. You can see that is Apple at the first sight. Round and elegant shapes, all the modern materials and colors. And bitten apple as a logo. The other thing is that Apple computers use their own operating system. Its called Mac OS and it contains a pack of special software which helps people to manage their files and programs, music player, text editor and of course web browser. All the same things you can use on your PC, but the controls and design are different. Yes Apple is beautiful and maybe safer, but still it is not as expansive as PC. So maybe we will see later what will happen.

Missing episodes? In no case!
by Sandra Stoklaskova

Have you ever missed episode of your favorite show, because you were longer at work, or there was a traffic jam on your way home? I think this horrible thing happen to everyone, who is a fan of TV and movies. But now, there is a solution for us. There is a long term writers strike in US, actually, that caused that supply of major TV networks decreased during the last months. Even though, these TVs are trying to catch the attention of their viewers online. At the beginning you could see the episodes from ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC only on their own websites. However, these days there is a trend of streaming their episodes on different websites, so you can stumble on your favorite shows nearly anywhere on the Internet. This occurred due to the fact, that number of audience online is rocketing every day and Televisions would like to turn this to good account, certainly. Market research firm Horowitz Associates says, that number of broadband users who watched full shows online weekly doubled in 2007 from 8% to 16%, according to the article from USA TODAY, by Mike Snider. By this project TV networks want to improve TV audience commitment. It is dedicated mostly to viewers who missed their episodes, and nevertheless, would like to watch it. The list of top web sites include: Fancast.com, Hulu.com, Joost.com, MeeVee.com, Veoh.com, MySpace.com, Television.AOL.com and definitely tv.yahoo.com.

Give me your IP and I tell you who you are!
by Barbora Misakova

Technology as still increasing industry has bigger and bigger popularity. But every coin has two sides. On one hand there is a fact that internet and computers save our time and let us do things quicker and better. On the other hand there is endless problem with our privacy and safety of the dates we have in our computers. The European Union seems they want to solve it. What actually that IP is? IP or Internet Protocol is an address used by certain electronic devices which should identify them and enable them to communicate with other computers which are using computer network. In other words IP is a string of numbers by which can be our computer identified on the Internet. Browsers such as Google Inc., Yahoo Inc. or Microsoft Corp. and many others should keep some privacy policy and so comply with EU privacy laws. While Peter Scharr, Germany's data protection commissioner, thinks IP has to be regarded as personal data, Google Inc. doesn't agree. Google claims that by IP address only location of a computer can be identified, but not individual user. Google also says that they collect IP addresses to provide better services to their customers and they can't do it properly if they don't know which part of the world these customers are from. Microsoft Corp. does not use IP address in the way Google Inc. does; their policy strategy uses logging into the Passport network. This whole situation makes me a bit crazy because people want to use internet connection, want to browse on the net and search for some information but they don't want to count with possibility that someone else will find out some little information about them. They are afraid of IPs but they have no problems with registering on sites as MySpace or FaceBook and writing there about themselves, sometimes very private data such as date of birth, description of their job or even photographs. The truth is that this topic will be problematic until someone comes out with some new and good solution. Hope someone like that comes soon.

American expatriates voting online
by Sandra Stoklaskova

Great news for American Democrats living abroad! This year they can on the first time in their lives vote online. This huge opportunity for expatriates to cast their ballots on the Internet allows them to vote for their representative anywhere they are. Democrats Abroad is an official branch of the party representing overseas voters. Thanks to them Americans can select their candidates by the Internet, fax, mail and in-person, too, in about 100 countries. The main point of this project was to provide the security of the whole system, and his authors are sure, that they succeed. "The online system is incredibly secure: That was one of our biggest goals," said Lindsey Reynolds, executive director of Democrats Abroad. U.S. citizens, who would like to vote online, must join the democrats before February 1 and must prove their preference to vote by the Internet. They also have to promise not to vote for a president twice. Than they get a personal identification number from the company running the online elections- Everyone Counts Inc. This number they can use to log in and cast their ballots. "We've had no security breaches. We do constant monitoring;" said Lori Steele, chief executive officer of Everyone Counts Inc .She is convinced that online voting "provides really a higher standard of security than is available in any other kind of system, including paper." We just have to hope, that this system will be working properly, and maybe a couple of years later we just can sit on our comfortable sofa and vote for the president.

The Improvement of Yahoo Mail
by Daniela Simkova

Yahoo wants to improve and turn to more social and mobile Web. Company co-founder and CEO, Jerry Yang, was speaking at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. He said that making Yahoo Web more flexible, mobile, and social would strengthen its position between the users, that want to be use online communication. Jerry Yang rendered a little example of the Yahoo Mail new generation, Inbox 2.0, which had a success because it enables users the personal connections over the Yahoo and its networks. The basic and important idea lies in the separating of messages according to the level of importance. The most important people for you list above the other mails. This "testing inbox" shows the summarizing results not only of the e-mail messages, instant messages, text messages, and your voice messages, but when you click on the button "simplify your inbox, " you can see the summarizing result also in your connection in the MySpace and LinkedIn social networks. Jeremiah Owyang, an analyst for the Forrester Research thinks that Web mail is supposed to have some social connection between all the products provided. He says: "By centralizing the main communications and aggregating on the Yahoo mail platform, the opportunity to centralize and add value to users is at hand. The challenge will be in Yahoo gently deploying these features, educating users and being flexible, changing the communication habits that users are accustomed to takes time."

Online photos get dimension
by Claudia Sonea

John Higham recounts on his plans of taking a hike in the Alps and how he is using geotagging, an emerging practice that involves tagging with location information of vacation photos shared by travelers and amateur photographers. Therefore, zooming in on the map it is easy to find geotagged photos and gain a fresh perspective about the chosen destination. It is largely practiced by tech-savvy and professional photographers but is likely to expand. GPS are becoming ubiquitous especially due to the fact that nowadays almost all cellphones and digital cameras have incorporated such a device. The new geotagged practice offers endless opportunities: for naturalists to map their bird sightings or chart out seal populations, for archeologists to mark where they unearth artifacts, for travelers to give life to their slideshows and so on and so forth. Andy Williams, general manager with the photo-sharing site SmugMug Inc confesses that it brings to a whole different level any presentation. Sprint Nextel Corp. and a newly unveiled gadget from Pharos Science & Applications Inc. High-end cameras from Nikon Corp. and Ricoh Co. can directly connect to GPS devices and support geotagging. But the surpise is expected from the upcoming PhotoFinder from ATP Electronics Inc. will write GPS information directly on a camera's memory card. Moreover, SmugMug, Google Inc.'s Picasa and Panoramio and Yahoo Inc.'s Flickr, photo sharing services, let you manually add photos to a map. While Google moved further last summer and extended its geotagging to its YouTube video-sharing site. There is also a negative side of the practice because satellite-dependent GPS doesn't work properly indoors, also there is a matter of privacy and GPS devices can tag the location of the photographer, while the landmark being photographed could be miles away (to this problem British entrepreneur Richard Jelbert offers the solution by embedding a compass that can help calculate the landmark's actual location). The issue of carrying an extra device and compatibility with the devices back home is expected to be solved through manufacturers that will include in camera GPS device, according to John Hanke, director of product management for geolocation services at Google. Until then it is your choice if you relay on the images shared and if you are willing to share tagged pictures with other too.

Not Registered Yet?
by Kamila Moravcikova

Something about me & I am funny, friendly, sunny, easygoing and creative person. I am skinny blond-haired woman. I love r'n'b music and tear-jerker movies. I don't smoke and I am a non-drinker. I like hanging out with my friends, just laughing and having fun. Something about me & I am meditative, little bit melancholy and reserved person. I'm tall 23-year-old student and I only wear black. I play guitar and I only listen to underground alternative metal. I never go to cinema. I'm convinced that being a human person is a punishment and we all are convicted to live in this awful unfair place called planet Earth. Who I am depends on circumstances and how I feel in a certain situation. Every single side of my personality has its own profile on every social-networking site that have ever existed. On one site I'm an ecological activist. On another one I am someone better who looks much better than I really do (this one I use when I'd like to feel adored). Once you are registered you can virtually meet people and be who you always wanted to be. Nowadays, when OpenID becomes popular, you don't even have to remember myriad of nicknames and passwords. Something about me & I am a person who likes to turn off the computer, meet the best friend to have a real chat. I am someone who loves reading real newspapers while having a cup of real morning coffee.

Laptops donated to developing countries
by Martina Harvanova

You can still hear an opinion that computers are deemed as a toy for privileged families, in fact for their kids. Although most of the families own a personal computer, the majority of the world's population can't have an opportunity to afford such a thing. I am just talking about developing countries where the frequency of possessing a computer in a common household covers really low levels. However, at present there occurs a market intension to saturate such a need also in less industrialized countries. The name of the latest novelty designed for schools in developing countries is Classmate PC, a product created under the title of One Laptop per One Child Project. Originally, the project and its products were intended to develop laptops for kids in poor nations to ensure "they don't miss out the benefits of computing." The item should have cost $100, but as the market segment of the project has spread in the United States, the prices got diverse. The decision to expand on the U.S. market came as an idea of one angry American who questioned why the program doesn't extend to needy kids in the U. S., because there are also too many kids that deserve the learning experience that is not allowed for them. And the OLPC heard him out. It makes me wondering how humans manage to envy the others. Although I absolutely agree that also in the U. S. there are kinds whose parents aren't able to obtain them the newest technologies, the difference between U. S. and developing countries such as India, where the project seems to raise successfully. Nevertheless the overall stark difference in children's access to technology is substantial. The United States spends an average of $10,000 per child on primary education, while developing nations spend far less. Bangladesh, for example, spends an average of $20 per child. That is how the project widened to the idea that individuals in the U. S. and Canada are allowed to purchase two laptops for $400, while one of them should be donated to a kid in a developing country and the other can be given to anyone the buyer chooses. The main idea of the project remained almost the same, but the conditions and the fringe intensions differ. Hopefully, the company will keep at least the idea and won't surrender to those who can't stand the help to others, for them the unfair and biased help.

Being on the board and surfing at the same time?
by Barbora Misakova

Being in touch with everyone is easy while you are at home where is no danger and when all what you probably want to talk about with your dudes is what the weather , brand new jeans you have just bought or last night party you were on. But what if you are somewhere you badly need to call someone because you are in danger or something bad happened to you and you are not able to connect with anyone. You have no phone, no internet connection because you are thousands miles from some broadband connection or cell phone network. What would you do? Fortunately there is Inmarsat & British satellite operator which provides voice and data services in remote areas dedicated mainly for maritime vessels and other users at sea. Inmarsat is a winner of European Space Agency contract for its effort to develop Europe's satellite programme. This whole project cost £360 millions, but East of England Development Agency, London Development Agency and South East England Development Agency helped with realizing this project by amount of £36 millions. This new satellite called Alphasat I-XL should be the most technically advance satellite in the world and it should support a new generation of mobile technologies and so enable to communicate across Europe and Africa. These days are ships using Sailor Fleet 77, ship's satellite communications system which is quite slow; it supports 256k bits per second transmission but this speed depends on other factors, so this system is reliable only on 90 percent. There is no doubt about definite success of Alphasat I-XL which will enable communications in crisis and disasters emergencies also enable governments to communicate with dispersed populations, and it will provide connections of houses, schools and businesses in remote locations. Now probably the most important information is that Alphasat I-XL is scheduled for launch in 2012.

Copy-cat
by Kamila Moravcikova

Another case involving one company complaining about being imitated has occurred. It involves big concern (Hasbro, original Scrabble producer from USA) against the small group of people just "doing something for those who'd love to play scrabble on-line" (Scrabulous inventors from India). In fact, Scrabulous is on-line version of Scrabble. Nothing less, nothing more. And Hasbro now feels violated. Maybe there would not be such an echo around, if the Scrabulous was not being played on FaceBook by multitude of its users. The truth is that this world is full of fakes and imitations (more or less precious) pretending to be something unique. Furthermore, you don't have to be an unknown group of people thirsting for fame and fortune to become a copy-cat. This also happens to well-known companies. Haven't you told to yourself "this looks familiar to me" after installing in the new Vista? Actually, it looks little too much like Mac OS X to pretend it's just an accident and not the lack of real invention. Office and Open Office? One you have to buy and the second one is for free? Does this make the difference? Actually, can you see any relevant difference between sneakers produced by Nike and those produced by Adidas? At least, both of them are made in some less developed country. Fall Out Boys and My Chemical Romance? Just two groups of boys whose make-up is running? Is the difference really so subtile or it doesn't even exist?

Image items all over
by Martina Harvanova

Every century, every decade gets distinctive by some particular features. In such times, people use to adore various ideas, lifestyles, heroes, but what is more, humans like to worship even material items. The age of tangible goods which are used to influence us in a great deal isn´t present just nowadays. It is often being claimed that we are facing the age of consumption, even a blind consumption. However, there always has been a tendency in the history of humans that was heading exactly to this - to the times we use to worship so called image goods. Recently, products made by Apple Inc. are admittedly the most apparent image items. Let´s take such an easy example as iPod. One would say, nothing special. Despite these thoughts, iPod in all its models is currently winning a goodwill of the world´s population. No matter what nationality or age, this tiny device is still dazzling and attracting more and more of us. Apple as one of the strongest and most popular companies knows how to do a great business. Its charming, tender and really efficient products, or maybe the name brands is required better, seduce current generation. As I mentioned, there always have been specific image items. If you are wondering, what could have been important for people more then hundred years ago, I´ll give you few examples from the past. The year 1873 and invention of blue jeans which were at first worn as work pants. Workers enjoyed it and the idea of practical jeans spread also among other people. That is how jeans became extremely popular, mainly in 60´s. To the list of image items people would "die for" we can absolutely add Coke. The product was created 1886 in Atlanta by local pharmacist who never realized his invention would have such a potential. Nowadays it is allegedly the most popular beverage, except the water. Some people could be able to spend a day without clear water to drink or wash, if they were supposed to waive the Coke. In the present, we can see a raise of next producer that is similar to those mentioned. All three of them dispose of great products, but their success does not consist only of this. The major aspect is a sophisticated method to sell an item. That is why Apple stands in front of a huge step - negotiation with film and TV studios in a matter of movie rentals through iTunes store that would bring Apple even more success and popularity among those who adore image items. And this innovation of Apple is definitely one of these.

Who would like to be MythBuster? I would!
by Barbora Misakova

All TV channels are fighting for more lookers-in and better position on the market. They are always trying to bring something new, something what had never been brought before and something what would capture the biggest number of people. Many times it's just an idea what can guarantee winning in this big competition. That's why are all TV Channels around the world trying to think out something new and breath taking. This is a case of Discovery Channel and their MythBusters. MythBusters is not only a name of popular science TV program but MythBusters are also Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman who are probably these days the craziest and funniest guys in America. What is their job all about? They can do anything just to examine some of urban legends, rumors and pop-culture theories and to answer questions such as "How can superheroes change their costumes so quickly in such tight spaces?" or "How could James Bond do that flying speedboat stunt?" So these guys are not only going to entertain you but also hazarding with their own lives! As it is in every similar show as this one is, these two guys are totally different. While Hyneman is more methodical and Adam more energetic, but as Hyneman says there is needed one powerful tool for the exploring and it is interplay. Both of them are very popular and all these shows are watched with liking. The show started in 2002 under title Tall Tales or True and after few-years time Hyneman and Savage started to work together. These days their popularity still grows and therefore there are no questions why production budgets are bigger and all experiments are more elaborated.
